I used to love PB & J but our oldest daughter has a severe peanut allergy. We found out about it when she was 1 and I had given her a PB cookie in Kroger's one day. She began coughing and I just thought she had a piece of cookie stuck in her throat. I got her a cup of water, finished my shopping and we went home. Called Ped's office and the nurse said to give her Benadryl. Later when she was due for a check up, the doctor scared the living daylights out of me! He said she could have had a full blown reaction and I should have grabbed my kid, left my cart right there in the aisle and went to the ER or his office. She was prescribed an Epi Pen and advised to keep that on hand and Benadryl. She had one major reaction in pre-school and a few minor ones we could turn around with just Benadryl. But the bottom line is none of us can eat PB now or keep it in the house. Even if she's on a trip somewhere, I feel guilty if I eat it! And I used to love PB on whole wheat bread, no jelly for a snack. I think she'll have to be married and all grown up before I feel comfortable eating it again! So in a wordy way, we no longer keep PB in the house. Consequently my kids grew up on jelly sandwiches! And her sister will ask for PB sandwiches at friends houses, even if her friend will ask for something else, Laura wants PB b/c she's rarely had it!

Don't worry, K.C. -- you're not alone. My mom used to fix bananas topped with a little mayo (spread thinly over each lengthwise slice) and dollops of PB. Later, I switched it to sandwiches because it's easier to eat that way. And it's GOTTA be Hellmann's! :)

Also, I have an uncle (by marriage, so it's not like this runs in the family) who brought a "banana salad desert" to a July reunion. It was sliced bananas tossed with mayo and chopped peanuts. Same principle in flavor, just different presentation.

Guys, ya just don't know what you're missing!

Now as for FRIED PBM&B sandwiches the way Elvis used to eat them -- I don't think I could stomach that!
