RICHARDSON, Texas (AP) - A man pulled a woman from their Mercedes during a heated highway argument Thursday and pushed her off an overpass into rush-hour traffic before jumping about 80 feet to his own death.

The woman landed on the hood of a car, which carried her a short distance before she fell off and was hit by another vehicle, said Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich. She died at the scene.

Witnesses told police the man and woman were seen arguing on the shoulder of the President George Bush Turnpike just north of Dallas, Perlich said.

The man did not die immediately after his jump, Perlich said. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The relationship between the two was not immediately known. Police did not release their identities.

Southbound traffic along a three-mile stretch of U.S. 75 was at a standstill as police investigated the scene.

People can be totally irrational when they're angry or depressed.

Tower climber shuts part of Westpark Tollway

Rescue workers are trying to retrieve a man who has climbed about 50 feet up a utility tower along the Westpark Tollway, forcing police to shut down westbound lanes between Gessner and Fondren.

Police were called to the tollway near Gessner before 10 a.m. when the man, who had earlier been walking along the tollway, began his ascent of the tower.

He climbed beyond the reach of firefighters' ladders, and efforts to talk him down have been unsucessful. The barefoot climber started to come down a few times but changed his mind.

The tower is owned by CenterPoint Energy, which had to cut off power to two 345,000-volt lines as a safety precaution. CenterPoint spokeswoman Alicia Dixon said taking the two lines out of commission has not affected anyone's power yet, but company officials hope that the standoff will be resolved the day heats up, air-conditioners start working harder, and the demand for more electricity increases.
