Now, what?
Do we have to reformat our DELL...Norton, Hotmail, AIM, Explorer, etc., to accommodate the changeover this Saturday?
I'm in unfamiliar waters here...anyone who's had this done, please reply...

Once you start using it, you will never go back to dial-up. I love high-speed. I know you will too.

Thanks for the info, fellow denizens of Storm2K!
Agreed, it will be nice to go from "horse-and-buggy" (Amish) speed to "WARP FACTOR 9, Scotty!"
FI, the average we are getting now is 28.8 K

...the upgrade will take us into 385 K,

with an option to go as fast as 3 MB

(later, when we have the $$ to do it).
"Cop-tan, the warp core canna handle th' streen! Weer breekin' oop!"

I have cable internet as well. No reformatting required. The big differences will be you will always have a connection and it'll be so much faster. I remember the first day we got it. NEVER going back to dial-up. EVER.

Hey, Streetsoldier, welcome to world of high-speed internet access! Just a word of warning, though, you may want to look into retaining a low-cost dial-up provider as a backup. I have Adelphia powerlink and there have been plenty of times that I've lost my connection because of problems with their fiberoptic systems. I don't know if this is just a regional thing or a country-wide problem but it happens quite frequently.

We have outages here(Charter) from time-to-time. If there's a REALLY bad storm(close lightning), it might go out but most of the outages are during good weather. MOST of them don't last more than 5-10 minutes, but occasionally you can get one to last 1-2 hours.

OUCH!
Well, in order to get Charter cable, we had to "ditch" HBO, Cinemax and Starz on our cable TV package (we still get The Movie Channels and Showtime Plus), plus do the same with our dial-up provider...this evens the expenditure out re: the family budget.
I hope it will prove worth the hassle; we also have to take our PC desk and all the "goodies" upstairs into the master bedroom (which is the only "open" cable outlet left); our lease wil not permit installation of a new outlet, which would be grounds for eviction.
I'm presently typing this in our kitchen; once the "great move" is over, and before the school year, we are going to place a student desk where I am now sitting for coppertop's studies.

I've been on cable for almost three years now and have only had 2 outages. One of those was when the house flooded and shorted out the poser supply for the cable modem. I can't hardly blame that on the cable company

Love cable access! It is so much better and faster. You do know you can run an extension from your outlet to where you want your computer. I did that to accomodate need for access in 2 rooms rather than one on a temporary basis.

I have outages alot here. I do blame it on Cableone. I have had them out here on several occasions and they can't find anything. They blamed it on my PC at the time. I now have a new one and still having the same problems. Surprise, Surprise. I wish someone would come in and buy them out. Or another company would come in to give their sorry behinds some competition.

You just described us. It's SO annoying when it happens. Customer Service is a load of (fill in the blank here).

I do also blame it on the cable company. On Memorial Day we had a squall line come through about 730am, wasn't severe, but did have some gusty winds. The internet was out until the NEXT Morning(because of the holiday). I was on the phone trying to call them and tell them to get their *** out here and fix it, but they weren't working.
I feel so much better now that I have vented.
