Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Strikes Midwest

By F.N. D'ALESSIO
Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- A brief earthquake struck the Midwest early Monday, rattling windows and awakening sleeping residents from Wisconsin south to Missouri and from Indiana west to Iowa.

No injuries were reported from the quake, which occurred about 1:11 a.m. CDT.

Brian Lassige, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, said the quake was magnitude 4.5, and its epicenter was about eight miles northwest of Ottawa in northern Illinois, close to the small village of Troy Grove. The rural area is about 70 miles west of Chicago.

Initial reports indicated no major damage from the temblor, although police agencies and radio stations within the quake area were inundated with telephone calls.

"It was mayhem around here for a while," said Pattie Burke, a dispatcher for the Ottawa Police. "We had more than 200 calls from residents in a short period of time, all of them wanting to know what had happened. A lot of them seemed to think a truck had crashed into their house.

"Here in the station, it felt like an aircraft was about to crash right here."

The quake was felt at three nuclear power plants in Illinois: Quad Cities, LaSalle and Dresden.

Craig Nesbit, a spokesman for the Exelon Corp., which owns the three generating stations, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission declared an "unusual alert" for all of them, although there appeared to be no damage.

"All of them were operating 100 percent, and no problems were reported, but we did a check of all safety systems," Nesbit said.

Nesbit said the three stations supply electrical power for several million Illinois residents.

Reports of the shaking came from at least as far east as Valparaiso, Ind., and as far west as the Quad Cities, and from Wisconsin in the north to the St. Louis area in the south.

They just had a 7 pointer off the coast of southern Alaska, a few miles east of Juneau. They felt it along the Alaskan coast and into Juneau. Minor damage to housing ( books falling off bookshelfs, pictures falling off walls..etc.. ) Im surprised no Tsunamis were reported.

Too close to shore for a tsunami in AK, but I'm certain one could build later today...

My family in Illinois...about 4 miles from the epicenter, felt it. Beds were swaying and so were curtains. We felt the one in Illinois about 25 years ago...was centered near St. Louis if I remember right.

Steve - if your family up there felt it, then I'd say for certain Jim's sister in Barrington felt it. I emailed her but haven't heard back yet. Last time we talked about the weather, something we don't usually discuss, she had said how bizarre their wx had been - tornadoes, severe flooding, etc. And now this! She would love to move back to Cincinnati and if they were in town when this quake hit, I'm sure she said - I want to move back home! Now we've had our share of mild quakes like this, since the New Madrid fault line isn't far from this region, but I'm thinking Chicagoan's must be wondering what up's with all this crazy activity.

They definitely have had their share of crazy weather as of late.

Earthquakes really scare me!!! I really hope that I never have the pleasure of experiencing one.

Garrett - the only one I was in was when I was in a loud, hot rod type car, w/o A/C. So the windows were down. We just figured the engine revved up for those few seconds. Came home later to discover there had been a mild earthquake! So I can't even say I was standing on ground when that one occurred! Dang! This was sometime in the early 80s. Like you, I wouldn't want to be in a strong one. Espcially in California. My luck, one would happen when I'd be vacationing there.

I just thought of something to mention. In 1993, December 2 or 3rd to be specific, a world renouned and highly respected Geologist predicted a very strong earthquake from the New Madrid fault-line. For weeks prior to this date, many articles appeared in local papers, instructing readers to prepare. This geologist was so convinced we'd have a very strong quake that day, it had ME spooked. My husband of course was going to drive to and from work that day, taking several bridges across the Ohio River. Nothing would happen he said. He was right. The date came and went with nary a tremor. My oldest was in pre-school then and I didn't want to take her to school! Or if I did I wanted to shop in the area, just in case. I just wanted to get to her if something did happen. My husband thought I was nuts to take this threat so seriously! I ended up sending her to pre-school that day. Years later I took a Geology course in college. My professor knew well of this Geologist and his now famous, or infamous, prediction. She said it ruined his career. Prior to his prediction, he was highly respected. Afterwards, he had lost that respect and I got the impression he was laughed at. Poor man!

Shawn - maybe you know about this man? If you were living in the Lexington area then, you heard about this prediction I'm sure.

I remember hearing about that prediction when I was in school. I was very young at the time (2nd grade??) but it scared me enough to remember it to this day.

Garrett - we just need to get Shawn's attention with this topic! She'll find something on it. If we only had the Geologist's name.....that would give us lots of hits I imagine. The date I want to say it was, is December 2, 1990. I think I had the wrong year come to think of it now. Nina was 3 and she was born in 1987. Her sister was an infant then, and Laura had been born in May/1990.

So if you're paying attn. Shawn - look up 12.2.90.

Interesting first article... especially how the state of Arkansas took it so seriously to go that far into planning.
