Next week you'll be sweltering! Sorry to hear about the veggies. It's a real pain to see all that work destroyed overnight.

What on earth? Frost on JULY 1ST in Arizona? Alaska has been in the 90s.
Strange.

Man, oh man, this is awful news. After all your hard work too Dennis! Tell, me what happened to your neighbor's garden, since they were putting one in like yours? Maybe this will stop them from putting one in next year? But what a way to take the wind out of your sails.
Frost in July, whodda thunk it?

is about 7000 ft in elevation and cool dry air can settle in those mountain valleys big time even during the Summer. normally during this time of year we have some humidity but not now and this is why the cold overnight temperatures. There are places in the West like Stanley Idaho and Truckee CA where this effect operates big time during the Summer and these two towns will come in with the National Lows in the 20's and 30's almost every Day during the Summer. I've seen it snow in the Wastach in July (and saw snow at Dugway during a June thunderstorm) and also in the CO Rockies in early August so "strange" things happen all of the time weather wise in the West.

during my brief stay in Denver CO, i saw the most intense hail storm of my life occur in July 1997. just offering the point that it should come as no surprise how bizarre the wx can be out there. both for the elevation, terrain and lack of humidity. almost if not more exciting than panhandle or tropical wx in respect to the type of region...

Actually, July 4th 1972 it "DID" snow

No accumulation mind you, but never the less, it did snow!

OMG Dennis!!
Us "lowlanders" do tend to forget what the differences in elevation can do with the weather!! Highest elevation in Houston is like 100 msl or thereabouts and that is on the far North side of town.

We've been running in the 50's overnight here in SV thanks to the dry air and this translates into low 40's for Pinetop WITHOUT factoring in the the cold air drainage into low areas (often called pneumonia hollows) from higher elevations which can result in another 5 or more degrees of cooling.

Sorry to hear that dennis.

We just grow some tomatoes and Lima Beans in pots on our porch. Tony would be really pissed if something happened to those babies

I can't imagine losing all of your garden

The average dewpoint at Tucson for the first two days of July set a new record of 21F. With dewpoints that low one can have some really strong radiational cooling and record to near record lows but still warm to hot daytime temperatures. Only 1987 (latest monsoon start of July 25th) and 1997 (2nd latest start of July 17th) have had average dewpoints in the 20's for the first two days of July. Not looking very good right and the satellite imagery shows a major smoke plume from the fire on Mt. Graham.
