You know how kids mix up thunder and lightning? When we used to go up to Ohio/PA for vacation, my son would go outside our cottage to try and catch "thunderbugs"!

I guess they don't have then down here on the coast. A friend of mine mentioned having them up in Dallas when she was a kid. And I honestly don't remember seeing them during my last few years in KY. I guess in the daily rushes of adult life, I'd almost forgotten all about them.

Now I want to see one! :)

I haven't seen any since I lived in NY. There used to be swarms of them everywhere and we'd run around trying to catch them, lol.

There are a few out in the neighborhood every night here, but nothing like I saw when we lived in Oklahoma... you could count on several flashes per second just in the front yard there. Come to think of it, OK was just a heck of a lot more interesting when it came to animals... snakes, toads, june bugs... all pretty common around the neighborhood during the summer.

I remember as a kid and chasing after them and then displaying them for a while in a jar w/ small holes made in the lid! :D

That's interesting. They're called fireflies in Barbados too. Did you see the earlier post in this thread about the kid calling them thunderbugs? LOL

I remember when I was a kid, my parents used to take us to Uniontown, Pennsylvania to visit relatives. There were tons of them up there and we used to catch them and put them in jars. :) We'd keep them for a while but my Dad always made us set them free.

Sometimes we'd see them up North in Clare, but not nearly as many as in Pennsylvania.

I actually saw one lonesome little flash the other night. I got such a fright because it flashed right in front of my face. That is the first and only time I have seen one here. I love glow worms too! They are ugly little guys, but they fascinated me as a kid.

Yeah... I saw that post about the thunderbugs... How cute.. .When I go up to RI in august I am going to go out and get some in the back yard... It is the ONLY bug I can tollerate on me... I remember they mostly had the yellow greenish ones, but every so often you see one thats orange-ish colored.. we always tried to get those! Maybe I will feel like a kid again, chasing fireflies!

i never had a house for them. i actually go out in the yard at dusk and shoo the birds away so they wont get the lightning bugs. they seem so cute and sweet.
