Some came by themselves. Some came with their children. Some left with tears in their eyes after signing a billboard Wednesday on Main Street in Green Bay in support of U.S. troops and the country.
Kristen Wiesner's husband, James, shipped out with the 32nd Military Police Company on Tuesday for training at Fort McCoy and eventual deployment to the Persian Gulf.
Tears filled her eyes after signing the board and looking at the other signatures.
"It makes me feel good that there's support for him, it really does", the 23-year-old Green Bay resident said. "A lot of people aren't backing it and, if he has to go, I'd rather have people back him than a bunch of people not want him there."
James Wiesner is a sheriff's deputy with the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
The traveling billboard is a collaboration between country radio station Y-100 (WNCY, 100.3FM) and Orde Advertising. It will be in Menasha today and Oshkosh on Friday.
Radio personality Randy Allen said the billboard is for the troops.
"It's important to the servicemen. Let them know", he said. "Not for us, not for Orde, but to say as a community we're backing everybody that's over there."
Greetings ran from simple signatures to longer messages.
"Sgt. Rick: We miss you, We are proud of you! Hurry Home! Love, your wife and son", one of the messages read.
Gordy Schroeder of Fond du Lac also stopped to sign a panel.
He has one son in the Marines in Okinawa and another in the Wisconsin National Guard.
"This is a good thing," he said about signing his name and showing support of the troops. "Everybody has mixed emotions; Whether it's for oil or against terrorism, it's something that has to be done."
Allen said he expected to get several thousand signatures in Green Bay.
