Volunteers Help Search for Missing Jogger
Jul. 20, 2004
SALT LAKE CITY (AP/KSL News) -- Family members say they're overwhelmed by the number of volunteers who are looking for Lori Hacking today.
Chad Hacking says the family has not had a lot of sleep after the disappearance of his sister-in-law and says there's been a lot of praying.
The search got under way early this morning for the 27-year-old who disappeared during a morning jog yesterday near Memory Grove.
The woman's brother-in-law, Scott Hacking, said she has gone running about three times a week for four years.
"She's very familiar with the area. She's in very good shape," he said.
Last night, SWAT teams spent the night scouring both sides of City Creek Canyon using thermal imaging equipment, but Salt Lake City police say they didn't find anything out of the ordinary.
Police are hoping for about two-to-three-thousand volunteers to assist in today's search.
Volunteers met at 6:45 am at the Medals Plaza parking lot, which is at 300 West between North and South Temple. Buses took searchers to Memory Grove.
Volunteers were encouraged to dress for warm weather, wear hiking shoes, and bring lots of water.
Searchers are being divided into groups of ten and given a grid map of areas to scour near Memory Grove along with City Creek Canyon.
Lori and Mark Hacking have been married almost five years. They learned last Thursday that she is five weeks pregnant.
They planned to move next week to Chapel Hill, N.C., where Mark Hacking is to attend medical school.
Mark Hacking works the night shift at inpatient psychiatry and usually is sleeping when Lori Hacking goes running. She normally returns home about 6:30 a.m. to shower and get ready for work. "Then I usually drive her to work," he said.
On Monday, he woke up later in the morning and called Wells Fargo and learned she had not arrived for work.
The park and canyon have been closed to everyone but searchers.
There are fliers up around downtown with Lori Hacking's description. She has long curly brown hair, is around 5'4" and has brown eyes. If you've seen her please call 799-3000.
