Lawmakers try to keep rainfall satellite aloft

WASHINGTON - Two leading members of the House Science Committee have urged the Bush administration to reconsider its decision to bring down a NASA satellite used by scientists and forecasters to study global climate and track tropical storms.

Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y., and Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Texas, ranking minority member of the space and aeronautics subcommittee, sought additional funding to keep NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite aloft instead of allowing it to fall out of orbit and into the ocean next year.

"As a research satellite, it has provided unprecedented insights into the nature of precipitation," Boehlert wrote in a letter late Thursday to White House science adviser John H. Marburger III. "The cost of keeping the satellite functional is minuscule compared to the value it provides."

Lampson asked Bush in a letter Friday to "find a few tens of millions of dollars over the next four years to preserve a key means of improving coastal and maritime safety."

The satellite, known by its initials TRMM, was launched in 1997 as a joint venture between NASA and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and was supposed to spend three years monitoring global climate.

Instead, it has lasted seven years and, with instruments and hardware functioning perfectly, has become an important tool for meteorologists tracking hurricanes and other cyclonic storms.

But with fuel for a controlled de-orbit running out, NASA earlier this year asked Japan and other U.S. user agencies to contribute $28 million to keep TRMM functioning for another two years. Finding no partners, however, NASA decided to bring the satellite down now.

Yep, Let it come down. We are at war!!! And that is more important than some satillite that tracks hurricanes. They can always be replaced by something better in a few years. BUT.....this war is happening now and that is what we have to think about.

Correctamundo KC. How'd a little hurricane ever do anything to stimulate the economy?

Slaps Kiko>> Now you know it's your patriotic duty to sacrifice!

Ooh ooh... I have an idea: Let's solicit Microsoft and Steve Jobs to launch one for us! They're loaded, eh?

(please attribute this remark to extreme sarcasm)

Um...A MAJOR storm hitting the US or the Caribbean could be quit devestating and I believe the 385 or so billion put aside for Iraq may be enough for a few months

A tax on Space Vacations? That should raise a few grand...

Alright, I'm reaching now, but at least I found a cool quote:

"A day will come when beings who are now latent in our thoughts...shall stand upon this Earth as one stands upon a footstool, and shall laugh and reach out their hands to the stars."

-H. G. Wells

My god!!!! Its not like we dont have anymore Satilites!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DO WE ONLY HAVE 1 Satlite in all of god darn space. No. So 1 going down is not going to hurt. Its not the end of the world.

KC - every satellite that is out there has a specific purpose and tracks it 24/7.

Just another short-sighted decision. Either spend the money now or have our children pay for it later when a catastrophe occurs.

And we complain about being in debt. We wonder why. What??? we cant use Goes-7 or Goes trillion or whatever to watch a hurricane. We do it every time. Whats this one got that is so hot.

WELL.....my thoughts, the MORE we have up there scoping things out, the BETTER OFF we are.....correct? Besides, Bush's War in Iraq will eventually pay for itself ie....Haliburton!

Here's an idea: Maybe if there was some of that $28 million in it for Halliburton? Surely some division of them has contrats with NASA? Cheney hasn't set that up yet? He's slacking, fire da bum. <<relax, more extreme sarcasm.

Now didn't the good Lord say 'waste not, want not'? Let's play the fiscal conservative card and NASA needs the boost.

After comparing TRMM to microwave, I gotta say it does a better job, imho. I like this rain rate radar imagery from TRMM

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT ... MRR/20.jpg

These are much nicer images than fuzzy DMSP SSM/I microwave imagery.

The other two things I see it does are:

85 GHz H-Pol (NoPop)
37 GHz H-Pol (NoPop)
Rain Rate (NoPop)
