March 28 — Holed up in residential neighborhoods, small bands of Iraqi militia were holding out Friday after a lengthy battle for the southern city of An Nasiriyah, surprising U.S. forces who expected a quick victory. U.S. Central Command reported that four Marines were missing in “intense combat operations” in the city, which sits astride a junction of roads leading from Kuwait to Baghdad.
