"Amish In The City"

I'll admit, I did. I studied and read up on the Amish and Mennonite faiths a few years ago and found them both quite fascinating. I attended a Mennonite church service a couple of times with a nurse with whom I worked in the ER. And we treated several Mennonite patients in the hospital in KY -- although someone always tried to call them "Amish" when we knew they were Mennonites. (I have yet to see any here though.)

So, the thought of seeing a group of Amish kids break away temporarily from their close-knit, simple, non-vain community and experience Rumspringa was an interesting voyeuristic opportunity. I have to admit, I'm somewhat surprised how much Randy cusses. I don't get where they would learn that or some of the slang they use, unless they read it or picked it up from hearing visitors say it. I'm kind of confused there. I'm also surprised at how quickly and easily they were able to shed their Amish clothes and wear next to nothing. I mean, even when I'm feeling fit and good about my figure, you would never see me in a bikini -- I'm too prudent. But Ruth and Miriam are leaving little to the imagination.

Of course, I guess that's all a part of Rumspringa. But I would have expected them to be a little more reserved. Then again, I know that there are all kinds of people within the Amish community, just as there are all types in any "group" that you study. They are their own little diverse world.

Mose is the coolest. :)

Exactly!

I can't decide yet if it's real or not. I mean, the language first of all. Then one of them (Ruth, I believe) was already smoking. They just seemed to fit in too easily in certain ways.

Then again, I'd be close-minded if I tried to say that they are *that* simple-minded and reserved, but it just seems like there were some worldly things that they were already aware of.

I was more bugged by the city kids -- wearing the Amish clothes, but not being made to wear them correctly? What kind of "roleplay" is that if they didn't really have to look the part and understand how the Amish kids felt? Especially Reese! He really gets on my nerves. He was wearing the hat cocked to the side and the shirt with the collar up, trying to be, in some weird way, stylish. That's the whole point of the Amish clothes -- no vanity, no pride. It didn't teach the city kids anything about how NOT to be worried about one's appearance when they clearly were. They should have been more strict on them about that little challenge.

I gotta admit -- Miriam is good-looking from the neck down. She has nice buff arms (without being overly muscular) and nice abs. Obviously, she does quite a bit of physical labor. Ruth has a cute face.

If anyone wants to see what they missed -- the premiere airs again tonight on UPN.

Randy is the guy who used to date Miriam. LOL! Mose isn't hairy anymore! :) And Kevan (regular non-Amish dude) is not gay -- or has not said he is -- but Reese seems to wish he was. My theory with TV characters (which these guys are, unless they really are being themselves) goes along with an old screenwriting adage -- "If it's not on the page, it's not on the stage." So if they are "characters" and not being themselves, they're not straight or gay 'til they're written that way.

Yup! I watched it too......and will probably watch it again.

The actions of the "normal" city-bred kids often made me sad.......often finding amusement in making fun of the Amish kids. (Kids?!? Isn't Mose and Mariam 24??)

It was fun to hear the slight dialect in those Amish voices. but I was surprised too at how many swear words they seemed to know....maybe they can teach the "city-kids" a few new ones!

"Rumspringa"....such a strange new word for many of us......it should be an itneresting show. The particular make-up of the city characters is interesting....the black girl, the gay guy....those Amish kids will be exposed to VERY different things!......p

Just wanted to let you know, I am in RI now, and when I was in the airport for a stopover in Phili, I saw am Amish family... I told my hubby, Look! Amish in the city!! I wonder where they were going.. and to let ya know, the Amish man was ghost white and so was his wife, and kids! So, this leads me to believe the tan Amish girl(with no tan lines) isnt real... I didnt think that Amish people were supposed to fly? And what were they doing the the city?? lol... Just wanted to pass it along!

Maybe they were Mennonites? They're much more progressive than Amish, but their faith and practices are very similar.

It's hard to tell.

Then again, they could have been Amish. But a husband and wife with kids obviously wouldn't have been on Rumspringa. So there's no telling what they were doing. :)

I couldn't believe Miriam was drinking like she was in this last episode. I thought to myself, Oh great, are we going to see what Amish act like when they're drunk? But I guess she didn't drink too much or they didn't show it all.
