China Blocking U.N. Action on North Korea

China has been working behind the scenes to frustrate U.S. attempts to get the United Nations to mediate the North Korean nuclear crisis.

U.S. officials are trying to build support within the U.N. Security Council to pressure Pyongyang to honor previous pledges not to develop nuclear weapons. But China is "blocking the effort," Fox News Channel's Eric Shawn told nationally syndicated radio hosts John Batchelor and Paul Alexander late Thursday.

Publicly, Beijing has urged Washington to engage in direct one-on-one talks with Pyongyang, but Shawn's report was the first indication that China may be following in the footsteps of France by obstructing U.S. diplomatic efforts.

The revelation comes on the heels of reports indicating that China's official media hasve begun ginning up anti-U.S. sentiment over the Iraq war.

The Wall Street Journal's OpinionJournal.com reported Thursday:

"China's People's Daily claims that Americans 'seem to have just come to know that war means the death of people' and that 'US huge troops [sic] obviously do not have adequate mental preparation' to fight the fearsome Iraqis. 'But as things stand now, a more extensive anti-war movement plus the unsuccessful action of US troops in the battlefield will.... help Saddam, this is true at least for the time being.'"

At the same time China is opposing U.S. efforts to build multilateral pressure against Pyongyang, Beijing urged Washington to let the U.N. Security Council mediate the war in Iraq, the South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

China has backed N. Korea and the Viet Cong, any effort to beat us down. No surprise. I remember when the F-8 Peace Pearl project was going on to re-engine the F-8s and other stuff, and they'd go from Long Island to Chinatown, and were caught sending "sensitive" info back home. The Gummit killed the project and threw them out. That was in the post-Nixon days when we thought we had a good relationship with them. No trust there  No surprise. But there will be an Olympics
