Sad and preventable is how police are describing an accident that almost claimed the life of a 3-year-old Hancock County boy.

Police say the child was hit by a car while walking along a busy road early Saturday morning.

Investigators believe his mother 39-year-old Thuvan Huynh left him and her two other children at home while she went gambling.

It was around midnight when deputies say a little girl awoke.

She was frightened, confused and alone except for her two younger brothers.

Soon after the children left their mother's home for the one mile trip to their father's house.

Tom Roan is an investigator for the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

"The 5-year-old daughter was actually carrying the 3-month-old to her father's [house] down Lakeshore. The 3-year-old boy, evidently had been woken up too and he was following them," Roan said.

Along the way the 3-year-old was struck by a car.

Investigators say sometime later motorists who were driving by noticed something unusual.

"They thought they had seen a doll on the side of the road," said Roan.

When the passerby saw the two other children, they realized what they'd seen earlier was not a doll but a small child.

They went back to the scene and contacted police.

While the children were walking down the road police believe Thuvan Huynh was gambling at a casino.

If that's the case investigators say that choice could cost her up to 60 years in prison for felony child neglect.

Currently, she is in jail on $150,000 bond.

Deputies say the little boy is now in fair condition at Children's Hospital in New Orleans.

Both his brother and sister are in the custody of the Department of Human Services.

So far deputies say they have not located the car that struck the young boy.

If you have any information regarding this case please call the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

Very sad indeed. How can a Mother do such a thing? Children are so precious and need to be taken care of, nurtured and protected. :(
