In a way, if it wasn't for NOW and other feminism organizations, there wouldn't be women like Jessica fighting in Iraq for us now. She'd probably be marrying her high school sweetheart and on her way with her first child by now.

The NOW gang would ostracize Jessica faster than the Augusta Country Club, unless they could get a little mileage out of her by taking some quote about her treatment by the Iraqis and spin it into a call for "world feminism" by decrying the Islamic views on women in general, and Jessica in particular.

While we're on the subject, it is my considered opinion (shared by some others herein) that the BEST thing to do would be to get her out of the public spotlight ASAP; it is certain that she is, and will be physically and emotionally scarred by her experiences, probably for life...and she will need a LONG time in recovery and counseling. The LAST thing she needs are "paparazzi" and lurid speculations dogging her everywhere she goes.

The "public's right-to-know" should stop at the door of the hospitals, treatment centers and her family's home, IMHO.

Yes, you are exactly right....although I'm not sure it will happen. It's a unique balancing act....Jessica definitely deserves all the time she needs to recover physically and emotionally. She experienced hell on earth...and the scars of seeing friends tortured and killed could be far worse than the physical wounds in the long term.

On the other hand, she is well on her way to becoming a huge celebrity...an American hero. The fact that a shy slender teenage girl put up such a ferocious fight against all odds makes her very attractive to Hollywood, Madison Avenue (endorsements/ commercials), and every publishing house in America....heroic legends (esp. female) just don't come along every day.

Jessica Lynch could get her education (three colleges are already offering full scholarships)...and teach kindergarden as she'd planned. She could also use her experiences to become wealthy beyond her wildest dreams.

What fascinates me about all this is the fact that even after she was tortured, had two broken legs and arm, and stab wounds, she was able to help her comrades shoot the enemy. Now how true that is I do not know, but if it turns out to be true, she is a hero still the same either way.

Bill... you are right. She will need to be out of the spotlight to recover mentally. This is a time when Bush should pull his weight and keep the media at bay. Or better yet, Hillary Clinton can use some of that hot air she blows for a good cause and rally to do it herself.

From what I've read the bulk of her injuries happened after her capture. If anyone has earned the right to make a buck off of her story she has! There's nothing like a Hollywood movie to help pad the paycheck of a teacher While I wish that the media would leave her alone I can't see that happening. Maybe we could make everyone that wants to interview her have to sit in on an 8 hours interview with Al "the bore" Gore first. That should cut the crowd by at least 90 %!

She is a Hero, but she helped her comrades shoot the enemy before her torture. That in itself was remarkable, what happened after her capture makes her even more remarkable.

"Helped her comrades"? According to the latest info, she killed four of the fedayeen on her own! Here they are...Saddam's own "best of the best", taken out by a tiny, attractive blonde haired, blue eyed 19-year-old supply clerk?

Her injuries are as follows; broken right foot and ankle, both legs broken, right arm broken, dislocated spine (just corrected by surgery) and a "laceration" on her head, unspecified location. Her injuries and "debriefing" is expected to take a long time, as indicated by this streetsoldier elsewhere.

Three Iraqis helped the coalition get her out...a pharmacist, a doctor, and a lawyer whose wife worked at the hospital where she was being held. They passed intel to the Mrines six miles away, who asked for more specific details...within 18 hours they got a "fix", and the decision was made to get her out of there.

She asked for pink casts, glasses, and when she is able to eat she wants turkey and steamed carrots...and she had no idea that she was a national headliner....she wanted to know if her rescue "made" her hometown paper!

What an incredible story! Thank you again to the civilians that got the word to the Marines and risked their own lives to do so!

She is a "HERO" plain and simple..

Sorry about saying she helped her comrades Bill. So many conflicting stories. Thanks for sharing that information.

Her 507th comrades looked in rather good shape..at least those 5 who were paraded on TV. The rest, except Jessica, I'm afraid were executed outright. As to why Jessica was spared for "special attention" by the fedayeen...it is clear that they wanted "payback" for the four thugs she sent to , and the info that she was limping when they took her might have spared her...for a time, anyway. That she was young, attractive and petite certainly was not lost on the "colonel" who was seen at the very least slapping her while in bed, unable to move from her injuries (truly "brave" fighters, aren't they?)...and further speculation ends here.
