BREAKING NEWS
Spot fire from prescribed burn smokes up Rim
updated 5:30p.m. Thursday Aug. 26th
At approximately 3 p.m. Aug. 26 a spot fire from a prescribed pile burn in Corduroy Canyon on the Fort Apache Reservation spread and made an uphill run toward the Rim Road.
The fire was stopped about 2 1/4 miles from the boundary on the north, and about 3/4 mile from the boundary on the southeast.
Smoke from burning slash piles added to the smoke from the fire covered Blue Spruce estates Thursday evening. At 5 p.m. Lakeside Fire Department sent out a press release saying there were no threats to any structures in the Blue Spruce area and asking that people do not call 911.
Four prescribed burns are currently in progress on Fort Apache Reservation.
All available resources were dispatched to the fire. The Bureau of Indian Affairs dispatched a fuels management crew that was working in the area, as well as a CBQ fuels crew and half the Hotshot crew (known locally as the "Halfshots.")
In addition, two dozers and two Forest Service engines were on standby, as well as engines from the Pinetop and Lakeside fire departments that were standing by for structure protection if necessary.
The fire burned approximately 30 acres inside the burn block before it was controlled.
By 5 p.m. firefighters had it lined on the north and east sides, and were lining the western flank of the fire.
