I have a really stupid question, but the curiosity was getting the better of me. If someone up North has an outdoor swimming pool that is not heated, Can they use it as an ice-rink in winter???

no amanzi.....not that I know of and I'm from the North...we find plenty of lakes, ponds, or outdoor rinks for that.

Now...back in the day... in my neighborhood they had a big round cement pool..not too deep that they use to leave open in the winter for skating.

I had a pool and it got maintained, and covered every labor day, and didn't open again till Memorial Day weekend. But of course it was an above ground and skating on that could have been very dangerous I would think.

Amanzi i have never lived up North myself, but I always thought they had to drain them for the winter, because if they were to freeze up it would crack the floor and walls of the pool.?.?.?.?.

j that sounds like so much fun. I sometimes do wish we would get cold enough down here to enjoy outdoor winter events like that. It has always been one of my dreams to skate in an outdoor rink.

That's right, those with pools in the northern United States drain their pools by (or on Labor Day) and cover it with a blue (usually blue, sometimes green, I would imagine) for the season. Typically, most pool owners take the tarp off and refill it on or around Memorial Day.

we drain them partially, and then put floatation balloons inside, chemicals, its quite an ordeal

I honestly was thinking that pools were drained partially for the winter (around Labor Day) and then covered up for the winter and most of spring, while I was posting my last message.

Here in Arizona, they discourage use of wood burning fireplaces in winter, but it is fine to burn wood in July when it is 115.

Fireplaces bring additional revenue when selling a house, but pools and spas are so common that they are often expected as part of a home.

We have a 15 x 32 pool outside and a spa alongside. Because the sun is so harsh on those of us who live here, I prefer swimming outdoors in July at about 9 pm when the air is 95 and so is the pool water.

And yes...even at that hour I wear a swimsuit.
