Been There...Done That!

How about a place to post questions about things you're looking to buy, places you're looking to go, books you're looking to read, or places to go to get help.
Been There...Done That seems like an appropriate name.
My wife Kathy was curious if anyone had read James Patterson's new release, The Jester. She's a big Patterson fan who loves books with his character Alex Cross...but his latest is set in a different era...and does not have Alex in it at all. Anyone read it?

Wx247...there's some good discussion under the threat about Dennis' computer crashing...you might want to check it out.
I've had good luck with Gateway...but then I'm in a city where I have access to both sales and service if I need it.
I use an MacIntosh G3 iBook at work. I've always preferred Mac over PC...so I am too biased to be a great help to you.
This is the place, however, where we can hopefully exchange some helpful hints for others.

Thanks. I have a Gateway pc, but most people tell me to get a Mac. What is the price range we are looking at?

Dude, you need a DELL. Compaq is good too, especially in laptops.
I have a hard time with Gateway and IMac, simply because their parts are incompatible with most other PCs, and will therefore cost a small fortune to repair/replace. Besides, DELL has the BEST 24/7 support (I bought the 4-year package with my Win XP Home, and they have never disappointed me).
Dude, you need a DELL.
As to "things I'd like to buy"...anyone know where I can find an EXC/VGC mil-spec K98K large-ring Mauser 7.92 x 57 rifle, German mfg. 1936-43, and so marked (Reichswehr eagle or Nazi-era Waffenamt, makes no difference), not cut down or sporterized?

I also have a Gateway. There was quite a bit of dust in the tower last weekend, my brother did most of the cleaning out with the special air spray that I use to clean the keyboard. I am going to do it on a more regular basis. This was done the same day I was hoping to get the memory upgrade. My mother ordered it and it arrived last week. I am awaiting my brother's return to install it. I rather have him do it, rather than myself.
The next computer I get will most likely be a Dell. Not sure if I should get the latest operating system (I currently have Windows 98) before getting a new computer or what..... I will have my computer three years on June 30th.

I've got a Monorail computer. Anyone ever heard of Monorail?? It's nearly 4 years old and no big problems at all. I have replaced a few inexpensive parts that I am told is basic wear and tear. I keep thinking this thing will croak and then dude, I'm getting a DELL. But it keeps going and going and going....and Monorail went out of business. Imagine that! On the other hand, my sister has a HP that's a few years newer and she's had a lot of problems with it. I didn't pay a lot for mine either so I guess I've been lucky. I'm glad to hear that you've had no problems king. Maybe she just got a lemon.
Do you all think DELL is a good choice? I'm thinking I ought to go ahead and get a new one before this one bites the dust so I don't lose everything on here. I can keep this one for my little ones and their programs. Any great deals on a DELL computer...please post on here.
King of weater...
As for a digital camera, I've got an Olympus and I like it so far. It's new so I can't really report on reliability, etc. I had a Fuji before this one and I loved it! Unfortunately, the zoom part of the lens broke and they didn't have any more so I traded it in for the Olympus. We'll see on this one. I had a pretty basic digital camera (HP 215) before the Fuji and I liked it too. I don't have a scanner but I'm thinking about getting one too.

I would also be interested in knowing how much Dell computers are going for. As of now I shouldn't need a new computer for at least 1 1/2 to 2 years.
In the last three to five years we heard the cost for a home PC were falling rapidly. My computer wasn't that inexpensive for June 2000.

Azskyman/Steve - again, very good topic!
I posted this once but I'll give it a go again - we're vacationing in Wisconsin this summer. Door County to be specific. If anyone has visited this area and has some recommendations (sites not to miss, great restaurants, etc.) I'd appreciate it. We're staying at Fish Creek at the Evergreen Condominiums.
As far as computers go, my husband (and his company, self employed) swear by Apple Computers. We have an iMac at home. One daughter's school (4 years old) has nothing but iMac's. It's a huge Middle School, 1200+ students, all iMacs. Remembering my first tour there when her sister's class was the first to attend and all the parents whispering - look at all the Apple Computers! Laura says they sure are easy to work on at school. Of course we have one at home, that helps. But that's my computer suggestion for the day - get an iMac!
Books....sorry can't help Kathy out on that one Steve. But I just read a book highly recommended by my 15 year old, of all people! I thought it was going to be a book she read for school but no it's on the best seller list and now I'm telling everyone to read it - Tuesday's with Morrie - an excellent, feel good type book. A true story too! Not a downer at all - a very positive one. I now highly recommend it!

Mary...have heard many good things about Tuesdays with Morrie. I walked by it at Barnes and Noble a few days ago...should have taken a closer look.
My sister and her husband travel to Door County about twice a year. I will be seeing them on my trip to Illinois next week. I will specifically ask them what areas they never miss when they go there.

KOW, I too have an Olympus Digital camera, by far, IMHO, the BEST digital camera around, not to mention the tech support they have, it's GREAT......in FACT, I've got to call them today, I CANNOT for the life of me get it to load into this new system!

Steve - hey thanks! Finally I've found someone who has visited Door County! I heard something about a Fish Boil, that I shouldn't miss that. We're going up in late June. So we have time for you to ask them about it. Thanks again! And yes you should read Tuesdays with Morrie - I just can't say enough good about this book. It's not mushy either - any man would like it. Not a chick book, if that's a term. LOL

Gateway?!! Did someone mention Gateway?!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!
IMO Gateway is the biggest ripoff company and should be held accountable for the junk they sell to us people who know nothing about computers. They sell you computers that are already out of date. Their monitors last about 2 years and will go out the day after the warranty expires... no ifs ands or buts about that. And their customer service ranks in the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Gee Linda...kinda harsh aren't we? j/k
Just goes to show that naturally EveryWxone thinks their computer brand/model is TOP best above the others!

As far as laptops go I would highly recommend Dell. At the office we standardized on Dell after going through about every other major mfr out there. The Dell's have been reasonably priced and are built solidly. One thing is to make sure that you get their extended warranty. Go with the three year covers everything warranty!

Linda, back in the mid to late 90's Gateway's were selling the most computers... so at the time that sound the most likely choice and I really needed to get a home PC for everyday use.
My Gateway monitor is fine, I will have it 34 months (two days shy of three years), the day after tomorrow, April 30th.
