Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests:

I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the can of soda that I had been drinking.

I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the soda aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the soda is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the soda, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye---they need to be watered. I set the soda down on the counter and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm can of soda sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.

Do me a favor, will you? Copy this message and sent it to everyone you know, because I don't remember if I sent it to anyone yet!

In a way I can relate to this. When my parents say it is time for dinner, I like to put things in their place before I get to the table. I wasn't quite the same way when we lived in Massachusetts. I like to get things out of the way so they don't have to be done after (in this case) I eat. I have a feeling it may be AS [Aspeger's Syndrome] related.

Bill, my long term memory is quite good as well. Sometimes I don't remember things in the short term, but once I do... it tends to be with me forever. Most if not all of my family (not sure about my extended family) are impressed with things I remember on certain dates.

Funny thing is, I am not interested in history, for the events themselves, but more so when the events occurred.

CAN I RELATE TO THAT? Did I type this message? Wait I just got interrupted so I can't remember!!

Yes, I am a classic example of it. I was diagnosed by me and my childrens pediatrican when we discovered Erin had ADDHD. It drives me crazy sometimes and my wife most of the time. I am either TOTALLY FOCUSED IN THE EXTREME OR TOTALLY UNFOCUSED IN THE EXTREME it seems.

I know of other adults too who have it and in fact are medicated to contol it. He is like a fart on a griddle the way he manages his projects!

I cut this out, or printed it out, not that long ago....and then I set it by a soda can.

Well, with all the stupid soda cans around the house I can't seem to find my copy.

So thanks again for sending it...

Now where are my instructions on how to print from my computer.

I think I set those instructions by a soda can...but..

Ummm....I'm in trouble ... I felt the exact same way this morning.
First, when I went to North Charleston Post Office to close out my stamp and cash stock there.

First ... I forgot my timecard in the car.
Upon returning to the car, for the timecard, I put my Mountain Dew back in the cupholder and subsequently forgot that.
Soooo, I went back to the car to get that....and subsequently made THREE entrances to the N. Chas. P.O. before actually having everything straight.
(And I made the exact same comment to myself)

David, my mom is a classic example of this as well. I tend to get sidetracked at times but nothing like my mom. Bless her heart...she'll work herself to death and then wonder why she didn't really get much accomplished at the end of the day. And believe me, she's always busy doing something.

For me, it usually happens when I get overwhelmed with more to do than usual. I try to do too many things at once.

Southerngale - I like that, AAADD - I have it!!! Just take a look at my house, and there's evidence of it.

Let's see:

We all live out of laundry baskets, even though we have dressers and closets. For some reason I can't seem to do all of it in one day, fold it and then put it away. It sits in the hall, clean in baskets. A few times it's come in handy. One of the times the hoses behind our washers split there was a clean load of towels just sitting there - how convenient! I blame it on the fact that you can wash a load in half the time it takes to dry it. So the loads get all back up, and I end up doing other things. Like cleaning out the coffee maker, or toaster oven.

I like to blame it on sensory overload or being a taxi driver to my girls. I'm rarely home for longer than 2 hours at a time. How can a big job get done, start to finish?

See I have lots of reasons I can come up for why I'm like this too. LOL

Maybe we all need Ritalin? There's a thought. he he

"LOL!" Marshall....Hmm, now where was I? Talk about loosing your train of thought, what train? I thought I was waiting for the bus?

How true......geesh! I've gone to my tool box for a certain size socket, wrench, got to the tool box, forgot what I was doing. Yes indeed, the age of *CRS* has come around full fold
