LONDON, April 30 — Anglers take note — British scientists say that after years of debate, they now have proof that fish feel pain.Animal activists are on the warpath after a study released on Wednesday showed how rainbow trout react to discomfort. They condemned fishing as cruel and demanded an end to the sport — but anglers themselves dismissed the study.

if we didn't control the fish population by putting worms and lures in the water, there would be fish living in your front or back yard! I know my little brother would love that, but all to considered, I don't feel like smelling fish guts where ever I walk.

I guess chickens don't feel the pain of a snapped neck and cows don't feel the pain of a slit throat??? Can anyone say food chain??

OK, let's see if I have this down...fish, cattle, fowl, swine, and plants feel pain, so in comisseration and solidarity with all living things, I am supposed to starve to death?

I remain skeptical. The question is whether they truly feel pain. What the article said was that they showed more than a reflect reaction. While that may indicate a higher level response, pain requires sentience and higher level brain function, which fish don't have. So while the process may be analogous on the more fundamental level, it isn't by any means the same as it is in humans or even cats and dogs.

I'll bet they feel pain when a grizzly bear swats them out of the water and eats them alive. Now that's got to be a terrible way to go no matter what kind of critter you are. Just think of all those nature shows on tv where the lions run down the antelope or whatever. first the lions run you to exhaustion, then catch you and drag you down, then start eating you while you watch. Nice, isn't it? Life comes from death. That's how the world goes round, people.

I would figure that fish would feel some pain... they are a living thing after all.

What I hear you telling us is that many anglers practice "fish and release" because common knowlege has always been that fish feel NO pain.....right??

This is interesting in two ways............ that fish respond differently than we have always believed....................and people respond like it doesn't matter................p

Well I have a special stick named "bliksem" used to smack the big un's on the head. After that I dont think they feel anything!

I do this because I dont like to see them flop around well "like a fish out of water" so by giving them one smack on the pip they are out of there missery and bound for my dinner plate.

I didn't write the article, just printed it. I have no idea whether or not fish feel pain or not. I can see by some of the responses that they apparently think this is my opinion. NOT!!!
