BUCHAREST – Romanian police have arrested a man after he smuggled a handmade machinegun into the country's sole nuclear power plant hidden in a bag, a private TV station said on Friday.

The 31-year-old man, a locksmith at the 750-megawatt reactor on the river Danube in Cernavoda identified as Eleodor Covaliu, told investigators that a person offered him 100,000 lei ($3 American) to smuggle the bag into the plant and hide it there.

"I've been asked to tie it (the bag) up with sticky tape and plant it inside," Covaliu told Realitatea TV. "I would have earned 100,000 lei."

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Analysts have said Romania, which joined NATO early this year and has been a staunch supporter of the U.S..-led war in Afghanistan and Iraq, could be a target of terror attacks.

There is quite an economic difference. What would he have done for another $5?

I would have paid him six dollars not to do it. All he had to do was ask.
