I've never read a set of instructions in my life, I've always *figured* it out by *doing*, cept this one, it's got me stumped!

Usually the side button are the same as the forward and back buttons on your browser

Makes it a little easier to browse without having to go to the buttons at the top of the screen

I use an optical mouse, but there are no buttons on the side.

I have one of those at work Dennis - as Marshall said they are for moving backwards and forward.

You should be able to go into control panel and configure the mouse buttons to do different things. Also if you have a mouse icon in your systray, sometimes you can right click on that to get properties. That will get you to the same place.
