WALNUT CREEK -- A gas main has exploded near Las Lomas High School's football field on South Main Street near Highway 680 in Walnut Creek, sending a huge plume of smoke and flames skyward.

At least one home was on fire, there were evacutions underway at the high school and on part of North Main Street and at least five people were being transported to local hospitals.

"All of a sudden we heard a boom," said Laura Roy, who has an office near the scene. "It's in a dense area of homes. From our vantage point it doesn't look like its spreading, but it must be."

Few other details were available at this time.

For the record, Walnut Creek is in Contra Costa County and EAST of Oakland which is EAST of San Francisco. There's not too much Northwest of San Francisco except several thousand miles of open water.
