MARIETTA, Georgia (AP) -- Two seventh-grade girls were arrested on charges that they served poisoned cake at their middle school cafeteria to about a dozen students who became ill and had to be taken to the hospital.

Lawyers for the girls said the cake was a prank, and that they had no intention to harm anyone. Lab tests showed the icing on the cornbread cake contained an expired prescription drug, bleach, clay and Tabasco sauce.

"They took it into the cafeteria at lunch time and began passing it out to students, just whoever would take a piece," said Jay Dillon, spokesman for the Cobb County School District in suburban Atlanta.

Some of the students started vomiting after eating the cake, officials said. Eleven of the students, mostly seventh graders, were treated at a hospital and released, Dillon said.

"There was some hysteria, from what I understand," Detective Dwayne Delk said.

The 13-year-old girls appeared Wednesday before a juvenile court judge who refused their attorneys' request to allow them to go home. The judge will reconsider the request on Friday.

Police said one of the teens was charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, among other charges. The other girl was charged with the same 12 aggravated assault charges.

In addition to the charges, Dillon said the girls will be suspended and could be expelled.

"We don't understand why they would have done something like this," Dillon said. "It's certainly something more serious than a prank."

Nice girls. And what's up with the school? Twelve counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder and they "could be expelled"? Like there's any question??? OMG.

That's another story that just left me shaking my head in disgust :(

Two thirteen year olds attempting to murder over a dozen classmates....apparently the motive was revenge. The girls, according to local news media, had both been bullied...and this was their way of "getting even".

A couple things I know that haven't been reported (thanks to law enforcement relatives)....both girls are small for their age, which explains them being bullied; also, one of them suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.

Was it attempted murder? IMO yes...if they'd used arsenic, we'd probably have some dead children; but there circumstances which led to their behavior. Bullying can cause things such as this....reportedly one of the girls had already attempted suicide....to "escape" the torment she endured at the hands of bullies every day.

Also in the local news last night was the tragic story of a 10 yr old boy who committed suicide....hung himself, and the suicide note he left said it was the same reason....he could no longer take the bullying and taunts from his elementary school classmates :(

thanks!

Persons with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills

seems to fit here....

Because of their high degree of functionality and their naiveté, those with AS are often viewed as eccentric or odd and can easily become victims of teasing and bullying.

I can see a reduced-capacity situation coming already.

Tom (Coldfront) and I both have Asperger Syndrome (high-functioning autism)...I was diagnosed at 35 with it. Azskyman (Steve) has mentored a couple of boys w/ A.S. in the past. Asperger's is more common in males than females.

I remembered reading somewhere that those with the condition are often misdiagnosed as autistic. That's what stuck in my head about the autism thing.

And I thought my generation was mischievous with Ex-Lax brownies. Not that we thought it up, of course.

Using bleach to poison others is apparently becoming commonplace in metro Atlanta....

On the 11 p.m. news tonight....an 18 yr old college sophomore at West Georgia college in Carrollton, Georgia has been arrested; charged with "spiking" drinks and food with a lethal dose of bleach before moving out of the off-campus apartment she shared with three other college students. Virtually every beverage in the fridge was spiked with enough bleach to kill the other three girls.

Police have no motive, but said late tonight the girl who moved out has confessed to the crime....and she reportedly said "it was only intended as a prank" (tell that to your former roomate who ended up in the hospital

OK, now THIS is a "prank"; we had a rookie in our station house (STL MPD) who refused to cut his hair, and wore it under a "rug" for duty.

After his shift, he took off the "toop", brushed his "luxurious locks" and sprayed them for that "extra hold" appearance. SO...we took a can of MACE, got a label from one of his discarded hairspray cans, and left it in his locker.

He cut his hair, after all. :larrow:
