IMO Airport security is a joke! What do you think?

Having picked up and taken my mother to the airport here in Houston over the last 2 weeks I have come to the conclusion that airport security is somewhat of a sham. Am I a day late and a dollar short? I can't vouch for those actually going to the gates since I can't without a ticket and I must say that operation lookes pretty solid considering the amount of people they had to process. However, on the outside there were unattended cars parked right next to the terminal in no parking zones and vehicles left unattended in the drop off areas for long lengths of time(several minutes) and not attentive(if he even was one)law enforcement anywhere in sight at the drop off point. I must say when I picked her up the pick up area was well patroled and clear of parked vehicles. Has anyone else traveling seen this type of lasness?

At Philadelphia International Airport, they do seem to be on the ball with the cars pulling up in front to pick up and drop off passengers. There's always cops directing traffic and getting people to move. That's pretty good for Philadelphia...

I think it depends on the Airport, I know D/FW has pretty good security.

I know that TF Green airport in Providence, Ri has great security! I was just thinknig the same thing when I went up north this past summer... The airport here in Houston has crap for security! I dont know who is in charge of checking the airports to see who is doing what, but I think that IAH needs to be looked at... In the Prov. airport, everyone in line already had their shoes off! and you didnt go through one security check point, you go through 3 by the time you get to your gate! Ill tell ya, I think that TF Green is one of the best airports in the US for not laying off security...

IMO it needs to start BEFORE you enter the Terminal. I'd like to see each airport follow the same rules. Some are definitely better than others.
It's better than it used to be, but a long way from adequate.

My feeling exactly J!!! Security should be almost a cookie cutter approach for each airport.
I'm glad to hear things at other airports are secure. Sadly it is not that way here apparently and we are one of the larger airports volume wise in the US. Time to contact local authourities and complain or better yet sic the news media on them.

David -- was that Hobby or IAH? Both the drop-off and pick-up areas of Hobby are usually swarming with security when I've dropped off or picked up someone. As for IAH, I've only been the passenger and it's been a while, so I don't remember how it was there.

It was IAH and specifically Terminal B. When I have been to Hobby I have to agree with your assesment on security there.

I think security is a joke also. Have you seen Hartsfield?

I don't know why they are worried about car bombs; there are places that would cause greater casualties than airports. Also, nothing is going to be able to stop a suicide car bomber, no mater where they try to attack (with the exception of concrete barriers). They would most likely just drive into the building and detonate the bomb, not park the car and escape first.

I avoid it at all costs. That airport is a nightmare. Way too crowded.

Really? That's surprising. Hartsfield is one of my favorite airports to connect through...

Anyone ever been to the Pittsburgh Int'l. Airport? That place is a nightmare, too...one time my sister and I had a layover there w/ US Air while flying home to NC...and this was a few years before 9/11.

Once again, I am surprised! I have flown through PIT a few times and thought that it was very clean and spacious. However, you won't have to worry about connecting through PIT much longer; US Airways is de-hubbing it.

I've been through Harstfield quite a few times since 9/11 and must say I saw quite a security presence internally. Externally I can't really speak to since I was changing planes. I must say considering the amount of ground traffic on the tarmacs and the apparent lack of uniformed security in those areas I would be concerned about the security in those areas.

I agree. It is a nightmare.
