My youngest daughter has just gotten chicken pox. With 3 kids who have not had them yet, we are in this for a while. Would welcome any advice.....Thanks.

Have you had the chicken pox? I've heard that it can be dangerous for adults...even though kids do better w/ managing it.

Prayers and thoughts w/ your daughter for a quick recovery! :)

Baking soda bath soaks can help relieve itching.

I'd put them up for adoption. Three kids is way too many! I can hardly take care of my dude on Sims II.

I didn't get chicken pox until I was 12... my younger sister got them first. I had a mild case(nothing really that bad). Try getting some Calamine(I think that's what it's called) lotion.

My brother, sister, and myself each had them 3 times, with each time being the worst. Doctor believes since we didnt have em bad the first time, we got them the 2nd and 3rd times. They told us if we ever get them again, we would need to get a shot for them. I hope to never get them again.

I'd always thought that one can only get them once in their entire lifetime.
I did have a small area of shingles one time on my chest just below one of my breast areas as a result of the chicken pox in my childhood that I quickly sought medical attention for.

Aveeno bath...little packets of colloidal oatmeal you add to bath water to soothe skin. You can find it at the drugstore and some grocery stores. Try not to scratch too hard, the sores can scar.......I have one right between the eyes! Watch for high fever and try to get them to drink alot of water. Good luck and remember that nothing lasts forever!

Ditto on Aveeno baths too. Buy several boxes and keep them on hand. Whatever is comforting to your child also - popsicles, soups, etc. Their favorite foods. Both my girls had it too but my youngest was second, and it was a bad case. High temps - 103 maybe? Her eyes were swollen and she was miserable. I guess I'd have to say prepare yourself for the second and third to get it, to have a more severe case than the first. Because they've been exposed day in, day out, just from living in the same house.

Good news is when kids today being vacinated need another shot, years down the road, but they're adults by then and under another doctor's care, your children won't need another shot. I've always been told be glad my kids had chicken pox and to the extent they did - because they can never get it again. Doctors aren't even sure how long these chicken pox immunization shots will last!

Whooo-eeee! My husband got them at the age of 27. Woke up the morning after a work happy hour, looked in the mirror and just howled. Thought he got something on him he couldn't get off! :hehe:

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Kevin- I think I am a little too attached to them for the adoption thing, though I understand I may be tempted by the time this is done.

Mary-I agree about the immunization thing. Thats why they are going through this. I didnt give them the shot, even though the pediatrician recommended it. I didnt want them to find out when they are grown and pregnant that the shot had worn off.

JenBayles-I would love to have seen the look on his face!!!! Though I am sure as an adult he must have been miserable with them (especially the way men are when they are sick!)

Served him right huh?? LOL!!

I had them when I was nine and so did the rest of my family except for my Mom. My Dad only had them over one eye and it was really painful!

I remember my Mother had to put socks and mittens on my brother so he wouldn't scratch. I'm sure that Calamine lotion would help as well. By my third day, my Mother put nail polish on my nails for me to help me feel "pretty" again.

Oh yeah! He was really very sick and absolutely COVERED with pox. Dragged his sorry hungover self to the doctor and about fell over (with relief perhaps?!) when he heard the diagnosis. I've had a good number of years to razz him about it too!

My daughter brought the chicken pox home when she was in 2nd grade and gave it to her two brothers but she didn't come down with it. The two boys had very light cases of it. I, myself have been exposed to it many times over the years but have never had it. My daughter has not gotten it either. We both have a natural immunity to chicken pox.

OTC Benadryl may help with the itching. Agree 100% on the Aveeno baths...

HOME CARE ADVICE FOR CHICKENPOX

1. Cool Baths: For itching, give cool baths for 10 minutes as often as needed (caution: avoid any chill). Can add baking soda 2 oz. per tub. Baths don't spread the chickenpox.
2. Calamine Lotion: Apply calamine lotion to the chickenpox that itch the most or massage them with an ice cube for 10 minutes (don't use Caladryl because the Benadryl in it can be absorbed across the inflamed skin and cause side effects).
3. Benadryl Medicine: If itching becomes severe or interferes with sleep, give oral Benadryl (see Dosage table).
4. Discourage Scratching: Trim fingernails and wash hands frequently with an antibacterial soap to prevent impetigo. Discourage picking and scratching.
5. Fever Medicine: Give acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) for fever above 102°F (39°C). Never use aspirin (reason: risk of Reyes syndrome). Also don't use ibuprofen (reason: may increase risk of severe strep infections).
6. Soft Diet: Offer a soft diet for painful mouth and throat ulcers. For infants, give fluids by cup rather than bottle because the nipple can cause increased pain.
7. Antacid for Mouth Pain: For severe mouth ulcers in children over age 4, use 1 teaspoon of a liquid antacid as a mouth wash 4 times per day after meals. For younger children, put a few drops in the front of the mouth after meals.
