Former Pantera Guitarist Killed by Gunman at Ohio Heavy Metal Concert; 5 Dead, Including Gunman.

Darrel was my friend!! I've known him and Vinnie since I was in 9th grade. I can still remember the times hanging out at Joe's Garage back when Pantera was working on Power Metal after Phil joined the band and partying my ass off with everybody. I even got to run light for them when their regular guy was MIA...I spent 2 weeks on the road with them here in TX on the Vulger Display of Power tour when they were opening for Skid Row, I was helping Terry with the lighting rig and running cables it was something I would never forget.

Darrel was shot up to 5 times at point blank range in the back of the head, KAT Vinnies Drum Tek was shot 2x in the leg and 1x in the hand, Chris the tour manager was shot 1x in the chest and is ICU, and it's touch and go right now with him, Mayham which was Security and Darrel's body gaurd was also killed as well. NO other band member was shot!!

2 people in the crowd were killed.

My Prayers go out to Darrel's Family and to Vinnie Paul who I know is in shock....after all he watch the whole thing go down from the Drum kit.

If you would like to know more you can listen to The Bone live here from Dallas Texas. http://www.933thebone.net

I'm sorry, but for those who don't know Vinnie and Darrel were Brothers...

This FREAKING LOOSER blamed Darrel for the breakup of Pantera, no other reason than that :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

Police identified the gunman as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, 25 miles northwest of Columbus.

Dimebag (born Darrell Lance Abbott in Dallas, Texas is being remembered in the "Bonehead Nation". MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx stated: "Dime, I will never forget all the times you made us laugh. I'm so happy we got to spend the day together in London recently* We should all live our lives as full as you have. I will miss you, as will all of us... This is a sad day."

"I'm absolutely beside myself with grief. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this," said Ozzy Osbourne, who often toured with Pantera.

Mark Hunter, lead singer of the metal band Chimaira, said Abbott "changed the way metal music was written with his guitar playing. I don't know anybody in a band who hasn't stolen a few guitar riffs from him."

Pantera was nominated for Grammies for best metal performance in 1995 for "I'm Broken" and in 2001 for "Revolution Is My Name."

Word spread like wildfire down here in Charleston, SC (through 98X) and it's a very tragic day for metal, and music in general ... "Dimebag" Darrel was an inspiration and did wonders for guitar playing in general, not to mention, he's one of my personal guitar heros. Learning "Mouth For War" back in the day was one of my greatest playing achievements.

Many Pantera/Damage Plan fans are stricken w/grief and a caller on 98X earlier this morning was crying speaking the volumes about Pantera and one of their shows in Indianapolis many years ago ... Darrel was sick with the flu and 102º temperature, but he played on anyway to a sold out venue with a bucket by his side ... just a testament of his dedication to music/playing and the fans ...

"Dimebag" Darrel Abbott .. R.I.P. 2004 -

addendum: I met Pantera/Skid Row in 1991 in Downtown Charleston ...

Captin... please accept my condolences on the loss of your friend.

When you've been to enough of these small club shows, you begin to feel that you're part of a small community. Our community has suffered another terrible loss.

Thanks everyone, like I said I have known these guys' for a long time, even before Phil joined Pantera. I could set and tell stories all day about time's with them and the crazy things that went on.

Here's a few memories:

Back in the day when Pantera was cutting it's teeth at Joe's Garage before Power Metal was recorded, Darrel wanted some pyros for one of the show, well someone over loaded them and when they went off they caught the carpet that lined the ceiling on fire, good old Darrel just keep playing like nothing was wrong until little pieces of burning carpet started falling on his Rig, then he's like "is someone going to put the F&*@ing fire out.

After the Dallas Stars won the Stanly Cup there was a BIG party at Darrel's and Vinnie's home with a bunch of the Stars and friends and Darrel and Craig Ludwig was drinking Tequila from the Cup, and somehow The Stanley Cup wound up in the swimming pool and suffered a dent in it that stayed there for the rest of the year. 8-)

I can remember Darrel, Vinnie and Rex crashing my Girlfriends swimming pool everyday after they would pratice and back then Darrel's hair was like water proof because it was so freaking frowed out thick. (this was like in 11th and 12th grade)

Another time I was hanging out with them in front of the home they lived at in Arlington TX. Darrel was tossing silver change out in the street and getting the neighborhood kids to "MOSH" for it.

Darrel was real, when you saw him or met him he was just being Darrel, Crazy funny off the wall Darrel, but he was also the kind of person who would help an old lady cross the street. I haven't seen Darrel as much after I got married again and Pantera folded, but the last time we hung out was last October at the Type-O-Negitive show in Dallas and thats how I will always remember My friend, Drinking Beer and telling stories of day's gone bye.

Dimebag was an amazing guitar player! Sorry to hear you lost a good friend Crunch.

Our local rock station WCPR (famous for getting local bands their start like Three Doors Down) is holding a candlelight vigil tonight at 10:45 at the station. I plan on being there!!

Damageplan was going nowhere but up. I have their debut CD and was waiting on them to come to my area. :(

Rest in Peace Dimebag!!
