Watermelon-Sized Tumor Removed From Woman

POSTED: 3:21 pm EST December 11, 2004

CINCINNATI -- Doctors in Ohio have removed a 66-pound tumor from a woman who said she now feels as if a long pregnancy is over.

The woman -- in her early 40s -- weighed more than 300 pounds when she suddenly started losing weight without dieting. Her family encouraged her to get medical attention.

The non-cancerous ovarian tumor was removed earlier this month at University Hospital in Cincinnati. It came out intact during a one-hour operation.

Her doctor said the watermelon-sized tumor could have been growing for up to five years.

What Bill said (whatever that means!!!)....

This story was covered on the 6 p.m. news tonight, since the surgery was here in Cincinnati. Thankfully local anchors warned viewers it would be graphic. The woman looked pregnant!

This story reminded me of my late aunt. She began putting on weight in the 1960s, after having had 5 children. She was nearing the menopause stage. Her doctor kept telling her the added weight and her expanding abdomen was from a benign tumor. That tumor turned out to be a 10 pound baby boy. Yes my cousin Randy. When my mom told me that Aunt Dot had a baby and not a tumor, I didn't know what to think! And remember I was only 9 or 10 then too...... I do recall looking at him thinking, wow, it was a BABY afterall.

But in my aunt's case, they couldn't do an ultrasound to confirm doctor's suspicions. Good thing this lady is living in 2004! And I'm glad it was a benign tumor.
