Millions of Bees Spilled on Vegas Freeway

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A truck carrying 12 million honeybees hit a wall on a highway ramp, dumping its load across the pavement shortly before the evening rush hour.

The truck was carrying 480 bee colonies, each with 25,000 insects, to California to pollinate the state's almond crop when it struck the wall Wednesday afternoon.

The collision spilled the bees and gallons of honey onto the highway and forced troopers to close the southbound ramp between Interstate 15 and U.S. Highway 95 for more than four hours.

State police believe the driver lost control on the curving ramp.

Authorities summoned beekeepers to help but decided capturing the bees alive would take too much time and money. Firefighters doused the insects with water to kill them.

``We're talking millions of bees,'' said Don Grogan, owner of Sedona Honey Co. in Las Vegas, who was helping with the cleanup. ``And tomorrow they'll all be dead. ... It breaks my heart.''

I saw this on TWC of all places. And Nick W. said - folks we are not making this stuff up!

If I ever encountered an accident like this, you might as well as cart me right to the ER. I'm now allergic to bee stings!!! :-(

And they had to be killed........... why? The whole reason they have to be brought in is that the wild honey bees are about wiped out from some kind of a mite infestation. And now we can be cavalier about wiping out our domesticated stock? Totally whacked.

There was a similar situation in Downtown Ft. Worth, TX over the summer, except all the bees were spewing out of the storm drain, and they stayed around there for quite sometime until local officials (and the pest control) arrived.

With the Hives destroyed and many of the Queens probably killed, the bees would have died anyway. I wonder where those bees originated from because there are not many pure European bees left in the Southern US because most of them have been supplanted by the Africanized variety.
