MY CITY -- A MY CITY woman died on Thursday morning after both she and her husband were struck by a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot in MY CITY on Wednesday at approximately 4:08 p.m. EST.

Officers with the MY CITY Police Department along with MY CITY EMS paramedics and East Alabama firefighters responded to the parking lot in reference to the accident and upon arrival found that Annie Moncus, 84 and Elmer Moncus, 86 had been struck by a sport utility vehicle (SUV) as they were attempting to cross through the crosswalk from the parking lot to the store.

The female victim, Annie Moncus, was bleeding from injuries to the head while the male victim, Elmer Moncus, had minor visible injuries.

Both victims were transported to Lanier Memorial Hospital's emergency room by MY CITY EMS. The female victim was later transferred to a hospital in Columbus due to the extent of her injuries and was later pronounced dead apparently due to injuries from the traffic accident.

This incident is currently being investigated by the MY CITY Police Department, MY County Coroner's Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

:( :(

As for the reckless motorist!!!! :grr: :grr: Hope authorities grilled him/her that a parking lot is NOT a highway and that pedestrians ANYWHERE HAVE right of way!!

Prayers and thoughts with the injured man and in the loss of his wife!

When I visit AL or GA, I notice that cars do not stop for people in parking lots or in front of grocery stores. When I stopped to let them pass they looked at me with distrust.

My heart goes out to the elderly couple. This death was uncalled for.

It is crazy everywhere, including my environs; people in such a rush, it is sickening. This is probably the number 1 thing that makes the holidays not as looked forward to with me.

Holidays are nice, but I want things to return to normal.

Great customer service...     If the man who survived knew it was an employee who did not really care, that Wal*Mart has probably lost another customer.

Oh how awful! I guess drivers are the same everywhere. Walking through our local Wal Mart parking lot in west Houston is worth your life. Same with most of the grocery stores. Pedestrians definitely do NOT have the right of way. What is the deal with people nowadays? Is that extra 2 seconds waiting for a pedestrian or letting someone else merge into traffic really that damn important?

Dave and I had the unfortunate experience of attending the funeral of one of our biker friends last year - he died of cancer. We were in the bike procession flanked by hired police officers. Some numb nut in an SUV decided he just HAD cross 3 lanes of traffic and plow through the procession to get into freakin Jack in the Box and nearly took out 4 of the bikes. He got a ticket and a major tongue lashing from one of the officers.

Some motorists, typically those in those SUVs, just don't care, they run stop signs. Makes me real ticked off! :grrr: :grrr:

It really irks me as well.

A bit off-topic, but related. My sister rides the bus to and from school each day. Well, a couple of months ago one afternoon she was getting off and she has to cross the little side street in front of my house, well, people are supposed to stop and let the people cross, but this driver got impatient and goes AROUND the bus into the other lane going 50-60 mph(which is too fast on this road when there's no traffic). If my sister hadn't known to look before she crosses she would have been hit. :grr:

You wonder what these impatient folks do when they fly (going through security), have to wait for a subway or elevator to arrive. Good grief, waiting 5 to 10 seconds (probably less) for someone to cross the street is probably lesser than flying, elevators and subways in terms of waiting time.

I've seen people do that with school buses as well. Who are these people and what planet did they come from?

One time at a Wal-Mart in Roanoke Rapids, NC (the city I used to live in) and before a new SuperCenter was put in elsewhere for that community and county...my folks and I witnessed a motorist who brushed a pedestrian with his/her car! :grr:

It is different here. Police patrol major shopping centers and cars mostly stop for pedestrians. There is even a lady that rides through them on a golf cart marked Pascagoula Police. She will write you a ticket too. lol.

Wow. Now that would be a story to be told.

"Hi dear, I got a ticket from a golf cart officer today..." LOL

Not to put her down, she does a great job.

Linda, we sometimes have that here, but Omaha is a bit larger than Pascagoula (400,000 population, 130 square miles), so it is impossible and unfeasible to have someone monitoring every major lot all day/all night. It would be great to have something like that, though. I think drivers would begin to straighten up, unfortunately just because they would have to pay a moderate ticket and perhaps receive a bit of a "lecture" from an officer.

That's another thing I don't get. How the hell does a 25-year-old afford an SUV? Dave and I make a decent living and we sure can't (well, won't go into debt for it) afford one. And have you noticed so many times that people who finally get an SUV start driving like they own the road? Heck, I've seen that happen to friends and family members. Owning an SUV = The Rules Don't Apply to Me. Bizarre...
