Yesterday my neighbor called me and said she saw a home that had been targetted with a hate crime out here. On the sidewalk someone had painted KKK in red paint! Our neighborhood is a very diverse one and to see this starting makes me really angry. What is wrong with some people?!?! I can't even begin to imagine how they must feel. I hope they find the jerks and hang them by their toenails!

Let's hope so. That kind of behaviour does not belong in civilised society.

I hope they catch the perps, depotoo. Hopefully they get careless and give themselves away.

We've had hate crimes - burning crosses, anti-semitic symbols sprayed on homes, etc. - in the past few years. In no time, are the guilty parties arrested, tried and convicted. But in the meantime, I am always heartened to see surrounding neighbors rally around the victim's. In fact, in one community an entire street erected Menorah's in their windows, after the Jewish family simple put one in their window. All of the other neighbors stood together and made that silent statement. I am not sure what unity-driven gesture could be demonstrated in a KKK incident but there has to be something.
I'd be mad too Depotoo. When I had my children, there were certain virtues/beliefs I wanted to instill in them. A love for God/their Faith, treat others as they would like to be treated, a love for all animals and respect all walks of life, race, religions. And guess what I discovered? If the parents demonstrate a respect for others, children will naturally follow suit. It's when parents voice racial opinions in the home, then I believe children become that way. Although I will say in my case it didn't work. My dad was slightly predudiced towards African American's. My mother would just sigh, hoping he'd change his ways. I silently put up with it too, the little digs he make while watching TV or in public. I decided in my teens not to be like that and I haven't been. Some of this decision was made because I was a teen and wanted to distance myself from my parents but later on, I was glad I took this stand, for what was morally correct!
Wow, got on a soapbox there didn't I? Sometimes it doesn't take much....

Mary and all,
I had to selectively divorce myself from "negative" concepts, too; but I learned that I am responsible for my own happiness (and by extension, that of others), and that I cannot allow the poison of the past to dictate my future.

I'm angry, too, depotoo. Hate crimes are cowardly and just plain WRONG.
You and your neighbors may want to contact the West Palm police chief's office (if your neighborhood is in the city limits) or county sheriff's office (if not) to ask about a neighborhood watch group or other community involvement sponsored by the police/sheriff's department. Also, perhaps your area of the county may have a ministerial association composed of representatives from most of the churches/synagogues/temples/mosques who can organize community education about and involvement against this disgusting crime.
I agree that one of the best features of Palm Beach County (and all SE Florida in general) is the wonderful diversity of cultures here!

The Danes did something like that during WW II; when the Germans demanded that all Jews in Denmark wear yellow "Stars of David", the next morning the King (Christian X) and his family all wore them, and soon the entire Danish population sported them as well.

I can't believe that people still do things like this. It's horrible.
