I think my computer just crashed. I'm on a different one now. Suddenly, it shut down and won't start again, except in safe mode. It's "possible" that the off button was pushed but I'm not sure. Even in safe mode, it's going through the Scandisk and apparently found an error in some cluster. I have no clue about computers or what to do. I don't even know what the point of safe mode is. You can't do anything in it.

If I lost eveything, I'm gonna be sick. I had just decided to go through the thousands of emails I have and my Image Expert files where I keep all my digital pics and save the pictures on CD's. Years worth.

I need to go back to college and major in COMPUTER REPAIR FOR IDIOTS WHO BUY FROM THIEVES. I know some of you know, but about a year ago, I was planning on getting a Dell and I called a local, reputable computer shop about fixing the problem I had with my 4 1/2 year old (at the time) computer. After a few long discussions, checking them out more thoroughly, getting friends' opinions and calling our local college's department, I decided to let him rebuild my old computer and custom build me a new one. Everyone seemed to think that was the way to go. Long story short: It's all crap and has given me trouble since the beginning, even crappy monitors as well. He was supposed to fix everything but everything got put off until "tomorrow" - then he sold his business and moved off to the Philippines. I went through hell with the new owners who refused to return my money but said they would honor the warranty and fix everything. We decided to take care of one thing at a time and after one of my computers came back (the custom-built one), I had no java and it wouldn't let me install it, most of my programs were gone or not working correctly. They had emptied my Add/Remove programs list because it was empty, etc. It went back there 3 times and because I didn't know what else to do as they promised to fix it, they just kept making things worse. I finally got java back, without their help. They had changed something in the configuration or something and it wouldn't even let me install it. A friend helped me with that but his knowledge is very limited. Anyway, I was left with 2 crappy computers, 2 crappy monitors and out around $1500.

Problem after problem after problem...

The ironic thing is that my old generic Monorail that I was replacing because it gave me error messages often and because it was just getting old and slow performed much better (other than speed) than these new expensive toilet scum ones.

Ah well...live and learn. And here I sit with them because I don't know who I can trust to take them to. I thought that place was good. If I could find the scumbag who did this, I'd beat the crap out of him or die trying. :grr:

That is awful Kelly. But on a side note, this is your 13,000th post.

Now maybe it is time to get that new Dell instead of spending more money on the computer fixed or supposedly fixed by thieves. They run great sales on them all the time.

Wait... if the pictures are on CD's, then you won't lose them.

If they are not, well, I'm sorry. :(

:roflmao:

Oh and you can get a new, good computer for about $400 now. NEVER EVER try and rebuild an old one.

I'm on the rebuilt one now. Although it has some problems, it's not nearly as bad as the custom-built one. I sought advice for months on this...where were you then, Brent? lol
Most everyone said custom built was better and less expensive on repairs, etc.

Geez...I need a book called COMPUTER DECISIONS FOR DUMMIES cuz I can't ever do anything right! This is really frustrating.

And no, they're not on CD's. I have so many that I just kept putting the task on hold. I had just decided to buckle down and do it. The other computer has been doing a Surface Scan for about 1 1/2 hours now, in Safe Mode. I have no idea what that is or if it will fix anything but it's 48% complete and it says 0 bad clusters found even though it has passed the B that came up as bad when it first restarted. Hopefully that's a good sign. I just wish I knew what to do next. I've gotta find a local computer geek to get friendly with. lol j/k

Safe mode is for getting rid of a virus basically. Something's obviously wrong with it.

Actually, I'm not sure, but given the choice, I'd buy the new one everytime.

It was supposed to be a new one. He was supposed to use everything new and I picked certain parts that I wanted, like the video card, etc. It's not supposed to be 2nd rate although I think this scumbag used OLD parts or something cuz he knew he was leaving the country. Dirtbag scum...I swear I'll beat the crap out of him if I ever see him again! And don't think I can't kick butt cuz I'm a girl - just ask **** Thompson! lol

Frick...I am. I'm sick of this crap. I'm doing research now to try and decide if Dell is the best way to go. I don't want to make another mistake. I'm gonna keep the one I'm on now because it's not nearly as bad and will be fine for a 2nd one. Dell? Compaq? Emachines? Gateway? HELP!! I know I don't want HP...I haven't had much luck with their products....a digital camera and a printer and my sister's HP desktop was crappier than my generic Monorail.

Kelly, I have a second-hand computer I'll sell for cheap. Actually it'll be third-hand if you take it. Runs good. Ignore that squeek and the dim spot on the monitor. You can put your mail in the slot where the cd player used to be. (does that make it electronic mail?)

Well, the Surface Scan finally finished and the results are gone. Now I've got a message in white on a black screen. It says:

VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows. If this file is not in your PATH, you may need to reinstall Windows.

Gee, thanks. That's a lot of help. Why doesn't it tell me what I should do next because I have no clue? I tried pressing Enter...nothing. I'm still in Safe Mode. I hate to just turn it off and lose whatever it just did.

GRRRR!!

It does... it basically says your computer has died, your screwed, have a nice night.

I know, I know, but that's what that gibberish means.

If I lose everything that's on there, I'll cry for months.

It's happened to me twice... I didn't have anything THAT important on there at the time, but it still was very upsetting.
