I feel for you women who put up with those garage low-lifes who do that kind of thing!

Not ALL mechanics are sleaze-buckets!!
My sweetheart owns an automotive repair shop...that's how we met. His shop was recommended to my Dad to repair (my then) POS car. My better half runs an honest shop...and I know for a fact he doesn't gouge anyone...women included.
As an example, one of his long-time customers died about 5 years ago of cancer. He and the customer had become dear friends over the years in the course of taking care of the customer's cars. They used to meet every morning at 5:30 for breakfast to start off their day.
This man was a sweet elderly man, who left behind a widow who is the kindest and most genteel southern lady.
When he was on his deathbed, my fella went to visit before he passed away. This dear older gentleman asked my sweetheart to look after his wife's car after he was gone and make sure no one ripped her off. He was really concerned she'd get ripped off because she'd be an old widow all alone, and he knew my guy wouldn't do that.
To this day, my sweetie goes over to their house about every 3 months, picks up the car, takes it to the shop to do regular maintenance or any necessary repairs. Then he returns it to her when he's finished.
She always goes to write a check, and he tells her don't worry--that he "put it on her tab" and that he'll "send a bill". She's older...so she forgets things like if she paid a bill or not. Not to worry.
He has a file folder about an inch thick which holds the "tab". My guy has never sent a bill, and has covered all of her repairs and maintenance since her husband passed away. That was five years ago. He's told me that he'll honor his commitment to look after her until she goes to meet her husband.
That is one of the major reasons I fell in love with him. He's the most honorable man I've ever, ever met. Early on in our relationship, I realized that if he'd treat an old widowed lady this well...so would he treat me equally as well. And he does.
