State Worker Sues for Having Nothing to Do

ALBANY, N.Y. — Pat Freund has a job most people would envy. She spends her days at work reading the newspaper and finishing crossword puzzles, and earns about $100,000 a year for her troubles, including benefits.

But Freund isn't content to put up her feet and watch the paychecks roll in. Rather, she is suing her employer, the state of New York, for not giving her any real work to do.

"It could have been a lot easier for Pat had she continued to sit in her office and do nothing, and continue to basically be the most avid reader that the state has employed," says Sue Adler, the attorney representing Freund in her federal civil rights lawsuit. "But she decided that was not how she wanted to live out her years working for the state."

Do any of you at work have the same situation as this woman?

Almost. I make 150/hr and spend close to 4 hours on the net at work. The rest of the time I am doing work, but not much...

I do volunteer filing work for the state where my Dad is employed...for his water quality dept.--no problem yet having run out work...but for a short break I wouldn't mind working on a crossword for a little while.

ARe you kidding? I work my a$$ off. We see approximately 120 patients a day and I post all payment and charges and talk to them about their surgery and look at each persons dictated office not to make sure the doctors charged correctly, etc. etc. etc. etc...I bring home work cause I can't do it all there. And I make close to 1/3 of what she does. I couldn't sit and do nothing, but some times a little break would be great!

The harder you work the less you get. Its been that way since I can remember. Come to think of it I'm at work right now goofing off....MGC

Looking on the outside, one would think "Oh, yeah, how do I apply for that job?"

But think about how guilty you may feel, particularly in a government-related position where you are being paid by the public.
