LOS ANGELES - Johnny Carson the "Tonight Show" TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79. "Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

Sad news to know that the king of the latenight shows is gone. :(

:crying: :crying: :crying: I was brought up on Johnny Carson. When I was a child my parents would put me to bed and then watch the news and The Tonight Show before retiring for the night. Of course, I would sneak out of bed as soon as I heard "Here's Johnny" and watch it from around the corner of the doorway in the hall. Godspeed Johnny!

May he rest in peace. He was a great legend, and I too grew up on his shows..

Oh this is a sad, sad day.

He wanted his privacy after retiring. And I'm so glad the press gave that to him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mary

PS - on a personal note, his show got me thru 8 weeks with a newborn, collicky baby. I would pace the floor each night, watching his show. He saved me back then.

This is a very sad day. I never liked Jay after Johnny retired so I no longer watch the Tonight show .

We didn't care for Leno either. We're big Letterman fans in this family. Leno's okay, he's just Letterman. And no one can really be Carson again.

I do hate to hear that! I grew up on Johnny, too. I had a tv
in my room, as a high school teen, and, I'd get nabbed by
Mama, often, trying to sneak and watch him, during a school
week night!

RIP Johnny :( :(

Prayers and thoughts with his family and friends. :(

I had a great uncle who suffered with emphysema for several years, too. :(

Like many, we didn't watch much of Johnny, but when we did he always had a way of taking the edge off the day. His style was unique...none before, and none since have duplicated it.

We watched his last show when it came on. I think the world stopped that night to see it live. And that was a touching night for a lot of fans.

A little bit of my life passed away with Johnny today...but we will remember his humor always.

I couldn't have said it any better. Johnny will be remembered fondly by many and missed. He can never be replaced.

LOL Breeze same here. My parents eventually gave up and said as long I had no problems getting to school on time I could watch Johnny.

Johnny was truly the king of late night....watching the Tonight Show was something I never missed as long as he was the host (I've rarely watched since he retired).

Rest in peace Johnny...thanks for doing what you did so well! :)

Jay Leno and Ed McMahon did a tribute to Johnny on Monday night's late show... rather touching!
