Ok, my storm2k friends...I'm thinking about getting a pet dog for inside my house. I have a nice watchdog outside and she comes in when it's real cold, but I think I want a little dog to hang out inside. I'd like a dog that is known to train fairly well - sg doesn't want to clean up much pee and poop! And I'm hoping to find one with minimal shedding. Weenie dog? And I'd like one who will be friendly to guests and good with children as well. Any ideas?

Oh, and cute is a plus but loveable is a must.

Boston Terriers are VERY FRIENDLY with everyone! They are short-haired so there's minimal shedding. They love to run and play and would probably want to be friends with your outside dog. I would be concerned that the outside dog may become a little jealous though of a newcomer that's inside all the time.

I have got two dachshunds...and they are great. Both male and get along relatively well. Neither one of them have ever met a stranger, however they are a little hard-headed. But they are for sure great lap dogs

Your local animal shelter has some wonderful dogs. You won't get papers with them but a mutt is the most loveable of all dogs. Just think...you could save a puppy's life

The smaller the dog, the better. We used to have a Silky Yorky and it was great. Someone stole it though we believe about 5 years ago now(or she ran away, but we don't think that happened) and we've never seen her again.

The little lab/border collie mix we have now is 18 lbs and is already too big to really play with and it will be 70 lbs by the time it's full grown.

Thanks - maybe I should look for a Boston Terrier or a Dachshund at the local animal shelter. I don't care about papers anyway.

Steph - yeah, that could be a concern but I'll just do my best to introduce them and hopefully it will be ok. My dog is friends with all of the neighborhood dogs. Many days, someone driving by would think I run a kennel or something - they ALL come here to play every day and one sleeps on my porch with my dog a lot. I've had dogs all my life but I've never seen anything like this. It's like the 80's when all the neighborhood kids met in one yard to hang out and romp around for the day. lol

Sorry to hear you lost your dog, Brent. Hopefully whoever got her took good care of her.

Silky Yorkies are very expensive to buy... usually running several hundred dollars. My grandmother had ours and then gave it to us.

Amy has two cresteds and they're adorable...well...ahem, not at first. They look bizarre (especially the hairless ones). Powderpuff cresteds are cuter (IMO). But the hairless ones are all smooth and soft like a baby. And you can put clothes on them.

Stay away form the Chihuahua. They are VERY hard to housebreak and usually take to one person only. I have had two Pomeranians and both were very easy to potty train and are great with kids. They do shed though but are very smart dogs. Poodles do not shed much and take about a year to potty train. The Yorkie is high maintenance as far as grooming goes but is a highly intelligent animal. Most of them learn things by showing them once. A weenie dog would be good for you Kelly. They are very family friendly and are also smart dogs. They are very loyal and love to ride in the car. Hardly any shedding and IMO they are cute as they can be. Another top choice is the ShitZu. They are very kid friendly and easy to train with little to no shedding.

Only thing about getting one from the animal shelter is you are just not sure what you are getting as far as size goes. My son rescued one from the shelter because he thought she was a Jack Russell Terrier mix. The dog now weighs almost 100 pounds and is huge. lol.

schnauzers are excellent. that's what we've always had. and i have a sheltie too. she's a great dog. very lovable

Have always heard that a Schnauzer is great for peeps who have allergies.

My former hair cutter where I used to live (Roanoke Rapids, NC) has a Schnauzer named Cricket and she enjoyed visiting with the customers from time to time in her owner's salon!

jack russell terriers are fun too. we had one in AZ. i really miss him.

We have a mean-mean Jack Russell on our street. This little dog bites your calves. Just little nips and goes at other dogs. Doesn't matter if it's little, he thinks he can take on dogs much bigger than he is (mine!). My Golden is afraid of this little JR terrier. So consequently, my opinion of JR Terriers isn't very high!

I was going to say three words - Golden, Golden, Golden!!

But you said little dog....now I am at a loss, b/c I love big dogs now. The bigger the better, IMHO.

But a shelter rescue would be my next suggestion. If you want little, you may luck out and get a wonderful, ideal mix.

And finally, for little, I always liked the mutt Benji, in the Disney movie. That's a cross between a poodle and a terrier maybe? Not sure.

I have 2 Doxi's.. I would have to say that is my favorite breed, but they are very hard to potty train! But on the other hand they are great with people and kids! They are also great couch and bed buddies! My Doxi's love to sleep under the covers... When people come to my house, and there is a blanket on the couch, they always have to look under it to see if there is a dog under it. I also have a Pom. VERY smart dog, Very easy to potty train, and very good with people and kids. They have some hair, but its not too bad in the shedding department. I also have a Great Dane, whom is looking for a NEW home. If anyone in the Houston area is interested, let me know!!

I have a wire haired rat terrier. (I bought him at a local pet shop for $275) That's what they said he is but I really think he is a terrier mix.
Ernie weighs about 12 pounds. He's wonderful with my grandkids and smart as anything. Since I work 12 hours a day, I take him out to potty at about 6:00a.m. and he doesn't go again till 6:00 p.m. - no accidents and he has the run of the house along with my two Siamese cats.

He does not shed at all!!!! He does bark when someone or something is around the house.

I love this little pup and would recommend a terrier.

My daughter has two shelties that are pretty terrific too.

I asked Annabelle (she be a ho'), and SHE recommends TOY POODLES!

They are unbelievably intelligent, faithful to a fault, good indoor "alarm" dogs, great with kids, and slightly "I own the place", but you can get used to that.

Like Debi says, "She's the 'Awe and the Mystery'...it is a mystery what's going on in that little head, but...she's such an 'AWWWWWWwwwwwww...' "

And they chase "Democats".
