LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland was free on bail on Monday after being arrested over the weekend in Burbank, California, on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs, police said.

Police discovered the drugs during a routine traffic stop on a car that Weiland was riding in shortly before midnight on Saturday, Burbank Police Lt. John Bilibert said.

The vehicle's driver, 25-year-old Jennifer Sires, was also arrested on suspicion of narcotics possession, Bilibert said.

"Officers made a traffic stop in a closed business district ... they searched the car because they saw a syringe and found narcotics," Bilibert said.

No further information was available on what type of drugs were found in the vehicle, and tests on the substance will not be available for about a week, he said.

Weiland was stopped not far from several recording studios, Bilibert said.

Stone Temple Pilots has been on hiatus since cutting its 2001 album, "Shangri-La Dee Da," and its members were reportedly pursuing individual projects.

Weiland's agent at William Morris and his business manager declined to comment on his arrest or on the band's status.

The singer posted $10,000 bail and was released early Sunday. He is due in court on June 2.

The California native has been battling a heroin addiction since at least 1995 when he was arrested for cocaine and heroin possession.

His drug problems forced his Grammy-winning rock band into hiatus in 1999 when he was jailed for repeatedly violating his probation and failing to complete drug rehabilitation. He emerged saying, "I know I never want to go through it again."

But he was arrested again in 2001 on suspicion of battering his wife -- a charge that was dropped after Weiland agreed to attend counseling. The couple, who have two children, are in the process of divorcing.
