Report: Pope's Condition Worsens
Thursday, March 31, 2005
VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II's (search) medical condition has worsened, the Italian news agency Apcom reported Thursday night, citing unidentified sources. The Vatican (search) had no immediate comment on the report.
Apcom said doctors had to intervene because of a "worrying lowering of (blood) pressure."
The news agency also said the pope reportedly had a high fever.
A Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he was unaware of such a worsening in the pontiff's health and that at least a few hours ago, the pope's situation was "regular."

I just can't imagine having a feeding tube either...and for that matter...in your nose.

And it's a bear to get down in there, especially for someone who can't swallow. But they're so narrow compared to the ones that go through the mouth and down the throat (for overdose patients who need charcoal). Just SEEING it made me wonder how or why anyone would do that to themselves. I remember how we used to use nasogastric tubes to suction out a person's stomach when they had a GI bleed. The nurses would keep instructing the person, "Swallow...swallow" and the patient would sometimes end up gagging and coughing (because they weren't swallowing and it was hitting their airway).
Rough stuff...but sometimes it's modern medicine's best way to treat certain ailments.

Sounds major. CNN in rolling coverage right now but good news from AP: Pope undergoing antibiotic treatment at the Vatican. That doesn't sound too bad, then.
However, CNN thinks something is up:(

The reason everyone's freaking out is because 84-year-olds don't usually survive illlnesses. If he were 35 or 40, this wouldn't be near as serious.

And boy can I testify to the truth in that statement. Anyone ever comes at me with an NG tube better be ready to face teeth and claws cuz it ain't nevah happening again! Just kills me when they say it's "Non-invasive". HUH?! Kinda like a colonoscopy is "non-invasive"..... HAH!

True, and I know you don't think this and I'm not even really directing this towards anything you said but just remember how many times just this year that the pope has been written off for dead.
He always survives
I see no reason to think otherwise this time.

He has done an extraordinary job as pope in his 26 years as pope traveling around the world preaching peace and love around the world.

I wonder if the Pope has a catheter. If he does and has a high fever it could be Septicemia and this is very dangerous for someone his age. We will probably know one way or another in three or four hours.

Not a good situation
I do want to say I am not Catholic, but CNN is saying this doesn't mean he is dying, and he received them back in 1981 when he was shot. So, I don't know a lot about what this all means, but I always assumed when last rites were given it was near the end.
He certainly has an extraordinary career and has made the world a better place.
