I got ticked off at my parents when I was 17 and showed them just how mad I was by driving to St. Louis from northern Illinois (350 miles). By the time I got there I wasn't angry, but tired...and decided I didn't want to spend money on a motel room...I wanted my OWN bed. So I drove home the same day. Needless to say, they didn't wait up.
Guess I showed them a thing or two.
I also drove from Washington DC to Chicago in one day by myself...stopping only briefly along the way. That was 700+ miles, too, back about 1988.
I hit the road tomorrow for San Diego from Phoenix, 5 1/2 hours to my son's front door, so that is no big deal.
So what has been your longest haul in a car, with or without the family?

Well for me the longest trip i have made was from Annapolis, MD to the Florida Keys...(Marathon) back in 88 and about a month later i went from the same place in MD to Fort Myers Fla i went with my uncle who was delivering boats at the time we slept a couple of hours to there and back home.................Currently when i go back to Delaware where my mother is located it takes me about 8 1/2 hours to get there which from my driveway to hers is 523 miles and i have made this trip several times and i only stop to grab a bite to eat and fuel.............My trip a couple of weeks ago was 280 miles from here to Marshall, Michigan which is where my mother inlaw is located...................But either way i have made lots of road trips especially up and down i95 from VA to NY........I do enjoy driving by the way except in heavy traffic..........

It's been 15 years since I've been there but I've driven from Lafayette to Pittsburgh, PA. If you drive straight through (like I have) it'll take you about 22-23 hours (which includes potty stops).
When I was young, my parents would pack us up & depending on where we were living (Houston, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City) they would drive straight through also.
The last time I did this, we stopped outside Cincinnati at Kings Island. Loved those roller coasters!

In July 1983 I decided to tour Florida from coast to coast...started at Panama City...went down the west coast to Naples, across the Everglades to Homestead then to Key West...then crawled up the entire east coast to Savannah before hitting I-16 west toward Hotlanta.
I went out every "out of the way" beach road I could find, and put 3200 miles on my car in ten days, and enjoyed every second of it (was the first time I ever visited the National Hurricane Center). I learned on that trip just how beautiful the Florida peninsula was...and just how vunerable to a major landfalling hurricane.

I have only been on a few long road trips (never driven myself/never will)... I have been to Morgantown, West Virginia a couple of times when my brother was going to graduate school at West Virginia University.
One of the two times (in June 1997) I went back with him for 23 days. When he took me back home [to Massachusetts] we left at 11:40pm and got there at 9:40am, that was an experience I for the most part enjoyed it.
In the early 1990's I went to Columbia, South Carolina, stopped for the night in Laurel, Maryland going and coming.

I "LOVE" road trips, I'll fry up some chicken, pack the cooler and hit the road, stop along the way for a *picnic*, we've even been known to drive to a *little, tiny town* in New Mexico called San Antonio, 12 miles south of Socorro NM on I-25, for a burger at the *Owl Cafe*, best burger in the west PERIOD! Now how silly is that??

18 straight hours from Quebec City, Canada to Cincinnati. Stopping only for gas and meals. That was the last time the kids and I allowed Jim to drive straight thru like that. Now we complain so much, he has to stop just to shut us up! We left at 9 a.m. and arrived home around 3 a.m. Sometime around 8 or 10 p.m., we were saying - maybe we should be checking into a hotel - and Jim was saying, naw, we're so close. You have to realize too at this point we had been on vacation for about 10 days, staying in several different hotels and the thought of checking into one more hotel at this point, would have been a hassle. What he wanted was to be home (and we do have a waterbed, something we both missed). The next day we were all zombies, literally, but he kept saying - aren't you all glad we're home now? We've never let him forget that trip and anything over 14 hours requires a hotel stay now. I remember trying to stand up when we got home and I was all humped over! That was one long car trip.........

Longest road trip - two actually - first was from Clayton NMexico to Baytown Texas in one day - stopping only for potty breaks and food.
The next trip was from Youngstown Ohio to past Jackson Mississippi and that was with a 3 year old who had to go potty every two hours.
Lets just say - when my hubby gets on the road headed towards home - he doesn't want to stop very often

I guess the three longest road trips for me were going to NH from Long Island with my grandparents and another separate one with the same grandparents to Vermont from Long Island. Later on when I was married we drove from New Jersey to Williamsburg, VA.
