My work just had an auction of surplus computer equipment. I got a Dell Dimension, 350 mhz, 128meg RAM, 4GB HD machine for $5. Yes, Five Dollars. OK it's not the latest and greatest but it's a rock-solid machine with Windows NT and the price was right. It's got a network card already. I also bought a network hub box and was salivating at the idea of getting a home network going.

My dear wife said, Oh, Nicole, (our daughter, out on her own) could use that. Well my bubble of selfishness popped. Of course she needs a computer. She can get email, and everyone's long distance phone bill will go down. The machine needs a modem and I am working with her to find one compatible with WinNT.

This was one of those experiences that make you grow a little.

What a Dad!!!!

Well, it could've been a $1500 computer that you would've had to buy for her eventually...

Thanks to all for your support. It really is a win-win situation (rationalizing my disappointment)

How's the saying go? ... Be nice to your kids, someday they'll be choosing your nursing home.

Good move, Cori!

We never outgrow our desire to help the kids. Nor do they ever outgrow the ability to accept your offers.

Granny and Poppysky are babysitting in San Diego while the kids are in Chicago. BUT, I do get to use my son's computer and phone line to say hello on the boards!

Another great deal must be right around the corner somewhere. Keep your eyes open!

I got a modem installed sucessfully. Having problems setting up the dial-up-networking. It needed the install disk to do that, then couldn't find the required .dll file. Have to wait til tuesday to see if the admin at work has another disk.

My first computer was one that my sis-in-law bought from her company for $50. It need a modem, too. It was an Acer. She called it an early
Christmas present. Then hubby became a comp. widower, LOL.
