My Dad got the wierdest looking 2005 nickle today! It has a picture of a man on o one side (can't tell who) and on the other side is a buffalo. The mans head is not centered and cut half off. That prompted me to check my nickles. I didn't have one like that!


2004 nickle.... I had two hockey related nickles though... on one side it had 2 hands shaking and below that it had 2 hockey sticks crossing each other. After all this time I had never noticed them before. I thought it was kinda neat!

Anybody else seen either of these nickles before?

Yes I have been seeing more and more of them. People have been and still are hoarding them. They are issuing new nickels kind o flike the new quarters they issued over the last few years.

The man on the nickel is none other than Thomas Jefferson in a new view. The buffalo on the reverse is a retro nod to the very popular buffalo nickels that were made until 1930 or so. Interestingly, the "buffalo" was on the reverse, and an Indian, er, native american was on the front. Similarly, Jefferson remains on the front, with a new look. One tidbit, the original buffalo nickel, or properly, indian head nickel, tended to wear badly due to the design. The buffalo and the indian head were the first to wear off. That, with the popularity of the design, cause specimens in very good condition to command premium prices to collectors.

As for the 2004 nickels, there was a series of three reverse designs, to commemorate the exploration of the west or something like that. Sorry, it's not about hockey. You could google more details.

one more thing.

The “Liberty” inscription on the coin is based upon Jefferson’s own handwriting.

If the head is cut off in error, KEEP IT. Misprinted coins found in circulation can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars!

Thanks for the info. I have since found out that they are not in error and are in circulation!
