POMONA, California (AP) -- A 2-year-old girl was rescued from a locked, running washer at a coin laundry and her mother was arrested after a surveillance tape allegedly showed her putting the child into the machine, police said.
An officer smashed the window of the machine with his baton to rescue the girl, who was "submerged in water," police Sgt. Matt Stone said.
The child was unconscious when she was pulled from the washer Saturday but breathing. She was taken to a hospital where she was listed in serious condition with cuts, scrapes, bruises. She had inhaled some water but was expected to survive, Stone said.
Her mother, Erma Osborne, 35, of Pomona, California, later was arrested for investigation of child endangerment and held on $10,000 bail.
Surveillance camera footage showed that the woman placed her daughter in one washer, then removed her and placed her in a second front-loading washer, which turned on when she closed the door, Stone said.
"She wasn't drowned but she was getting there," Los Angeles County fire Capt. Dan Ramirez said.
The machine apparently locks automatically when the wash cycle begins and does not unlock until the cycle ends, Ramirez said.
Efforts by the girl's mother and bystanders to unlock the door failed.

I agree, children are a precious gift. I just don't understand how people can do things like this.

OMG, that is one horrific story. Thank God they got the little girl out. What got me is though is near the end of the article, it states the mother was trying to get the door open. Did she just go insane there for a few minutes and then suddenly realize what she had done? No way, she knew what she was doing. Very sad story.
And yes some people just should not have children. Period.

I have a feeling that it was her attempt to make it look like it was an accident.

You take the kid's clothes OFF to wash them, lady....!!!
I'm with Dennis - she had to be on drugs, or, mental!

Annette - LOL Yes it's those snaps and buckles that are the problem, too hard to undo.
She was mental alright! Can't believe though she was suddenly trying to open the door. If no one was around, was she going to just dry her off and pretend it never happened? I know, I know she was trying to open the door b/c she was caught.
My brother actually put my other brother in the dryer once, back in the 60s I think. It turned only once and he got out okay. I heard about it but I was too little to remember it. Good thing they didn't put me in there.....Jim's little brother was shoved down the laundry shoot and ended up the laundry room, 1 floor below. We always blame that incident on his odd behavior! But these are kids vs kids, or siblings vs siblings incidents, not parental vs children. Yikes!

They should have put the mother in a dryer and put it on high! I just don't understand some people. There are plenty of people out there praying for a child and would happily adopt!

I'm a man of overabundant patience...seemingly endless sometimes.
But my hair trigger is seeing a parent or someone abuse, verbally or physically, a child.
I'm afraid this mild mannered Clark Kent would have been awfully hard on that mom had I witnessed the event. Two arrests would probably been made.

I heard this on Fox News Channel... what did she think she was doing? Something good?
There are couples that shouldn't have children that don't want them and then couples that would love to have children and physically for a number or reasons can not..... how annoying, eh?

I think that mom had to be on something to stick their KID in the machine. That's a sick story.

I agree, Jeremy. We shouldn't judge somebody really. It is clear that she has a problem or wouldn't of done such things. We are all unique, with different levels of problems some good, bad and indifferent.

I chose not to have children, but, not because of
abusive tendencies - because it was never a right
decision with my two EX-husbands, while married!
But, this kind of "fecal substance" inflames me!

Same here, Breeze... only I do not wish to get married for reasons that are related to my condition (Asperger's Syndrome)... I don't see how too many with AS would get married.

Tom, there is most surely a woman out there, somewhere,
who is patient and kind, and, who may smile and see that your
AS is "your personality"...just like some of us have different
personalities than others? Individuality is a good thing!

I don't mind remaining single. I can't really see myself meeting anyone. We are all different and this is the way that I am different. It would be nice to interact with people my age with the help I believe I am getting from interacting with people of all ages here at Storm2K.
