Australian scientists plan to clone extinct Tasmanian tiger

Australian researchers are reviving a project to bring an extinct animal known as the Tasmanian tiger back from the dead through cloning.

Three months after the Australian Museum shelved plans to clone the tiger -- also known as a thylacine -- a group of universities and a research institute are planning to revive the project, the Sun-Herald newspaper reported.

Mike Archer, dean of science at the University of New South Wales, was quoted as saying that researchers from NSW and Victoria states were likely to join the programme, which involves recovering DNA from a pup preserved in 1866 to breed a living specimen.

"A group of institutions is involved in moving ahead with creating new ways of getting the thylacine project back on track," he was quoted as saying, adding he would like his own university involved.

The Tasmanian tiger, a dog-like creature christened for its striped pelt, was hunted into extinction because it was seen as a threat to livestock.

The last known specimen died in Hobart zoo in 1936 but there have been thousands of unconfirmed sightings since then.

When the museum abandoned its own cloning bid, it said the quality of the DNA had been too degraded to work with.

Its wild, Jurassic Park yes........Its viable science, however we can get ourselves into trouble with projects like this. This one may not be a real threat, however when they decide that they want to bring back T-Rex....Look out... LOL! It sounds funny, but there are some mad scientists out there.

Remember, Jurassic Park was a work of fiction. Just because bad things happened in that book does not mean that bad things will happen here.

No gtalum you forgot that we are dealing with fiction instead of science and fiction is the best because it is totally sweet and makes me happy.

Behold.

Kevin : Watch out a ferocious tasmanian tiger! Shoot it with a gun Frank.

Frank : *bang bang bang bang*

Kevin : *kicks dead tasmanian tiger*

Frank : *bang bang*

Kevin : Whew, I think you just saved the world Frank. Imagine if this creature had gotten out of Australia and into an ecosystem it wasn't suited for, caught a disease and died. Not to mention that it was killed by rugged frontiersmen a century ago. This super beast could have eradicated all of humanity and even the world.

Malcolm : You silly silly Kevin, don't you know that the world has taken more than this puny tasmanian tiger. It was of course due to the laws of fractal science and chaos stuff that the tasmanian tiger broke out of the lab, but as all chaos resumes towards order we as a species and the homeostasis of the world were in no danger.

Michael Crichton : I believe people can bend spoons with their minds.

<< I think the above dialogue proves my point.

Look just because I have a science degree and today I just happen to be mad about something, doesn't mean that I am always a "mad scientist"
