2005 National Science Olympiad

Hey guys...right now I'm in Illinois at the U of I in Champaign-Urbana getting ready to compete in the National Science Olympiad Tournament! I'm so excited and nervous and I can't wait for tomorrow! See you guys later! (Right off the top of my head for other state's teams where people are from on here....there is Paul Breaux Middle School from Lafayette and Baton Rouge Magnet High School from Louisiana! :)

Paul Breaux Middle School....I went there (many, many, many, many, many, many years ago :eek: )

Results!

Our team went down overall...from 28th to 39th (out of 60 teams).....but we still medaled in two events.

My Personal Results (I had 5 events):

Event: Astronomy
Description: Identify several deep sky objects and calculate distances, magnitudes, etc. with formulas.
Place: 34th

Event: Dynamic Planet
Description: This year's focus topic was glaciers, glacial history, and effects of glaciation over time.
Place: 2nd (Silver Medal, YAY!)

Event: Fermi Questions
Description: Use intuitive guesswork to answer questions with a scientific exponential. Sample Q: How many drops of water are in the ocean?
Place: 58th

Event: Mission Possible
Description: Build a Rube-Goldberg like device that will start with placing a magnet against part of the device and end with a ping pong ball launching outside of the plane of the device and coming back in, ceasing movement.
Place: 51st (Yeah...we had problems. :\ )

Event: Remote Sensing
Description: Analyze aerial photographs, thermal images, satellite pictures, etc. and compare it to topographic maps. Be able to identify natural and cultural features.
Place: 10th
