Icky scary Spiders!!!

Saw the snake thread and that got me thinking of spiders. Wonder if anyone else has ever been this scared of them and found a way to overcome that fear. I am so scared of spiders I start to shake, get teary eyed, and short of breath. I can't kill them unless it's to spray them with some cleaning chemical from like 6 feet away minimal. Of course that only works on itty tiny spiders. If it's a bigger spider hubby has to kill it. And I can't stay in the room cause the thought of the 'squish' makes my tummy unhappy to um... put it mildly. Thankfully, hubby is really supportive of my freaking out scared/terrified thing *snickers at self*.
When I was a teen there was a spider in my hair at a party. And ever since, every year the fear has become worse and worse. It's the most ridiculous fear. Problem is I love gardening... but now starting to not enjoy that as much cause of course they are in the garden and they need to be there. It's such a goofy fear *sighs* but very very bad. I'll hold a snake... spiders make me run (not kidding) in fear!

Hypnosis may help. Or you can try some self therapy. Get a spider in a jar and over a period of time keep looking at the spider and then try some relaxtion therapy (tapes are available) and gradually get closer and closer to the spider until you can actually hold one.

We have a beautiful spider here called a yellow silk spider. they have HUGE webs and ours is in our courtyard. we have been known to move her to the back of the house in really bad weather. dont know if she appreciates it or not.
we also have some pretty snakes. we have a gorgeous corn snake that comes up on the deck pretty often. but then again we have moccasins and pygmy rattlers. yuck.

I am terrified of spiders or any large insects. My husband does not understand my fear nor is he supportive. He insists I am acting childish and that it's more afraid of me than I should be of it. I can't help it and he doesn't understand. He actually likes insects (

) and likes to photograph them. He actually takes some beautiful shots. He usually "rescues" spiders or bugs that get in the house and puts them outside, except the Palmetto bugs that he kills, of which I am thankful.

My brother has been a police officer for many years. If you met him, you would quickly decide that nothing bothers this guy, and you would almost be right. The boy has no fear, except for spiders.
One day my son and niece went up to the balcony and tossed a fake spider down on his lap. You would have thought the world was coming to an end.. He leaped up and ran around screaming, we were laughing hysterically, the dog was barking, the cat ran and hid for four hours, and he must have killed that fake spider 50 times. After that, I realized just how afraid of them he was. We haven't played a joke like that since, although we refer to the incident from time to time and chuckle. I just hope that he never has to respond to a call in a pet shop that sells spiders!

I was bitten on the toe by a brown recluse when I was in high school. So most of the time now, I'll catch them in TP and send them down the toilet. Spiders don't drown that easily so I'm getting rid of them without actually killing them.
Wildest thing I ever encountered was a dead scorpion. We didn't find it until we (Mom and I) were packing to move from Louisville to Lexington. It was smooshed under a bookshelf. My best guess is that it came with us (probably dead already) when we moved from Colorado to KY.

I do fear the brown recluse but I am more afraid of the cockroach than a spider.

See... now if the jar was closed with no way to get out I'd probably able to handle that ok. But if the top were open, no way. I think it's the possibility of being bit by one that actually scares me.
Oh and btw... the urban legend about daddy long legs being the most poisonous spider in the world but can't bite you cause of small fangs is NOT TRUE.
They can bite you. But they are not very poisonous. Saw that disproved by those guys that find out if urban legends are true on the learning channel.
