I'm glad that you're okay. A 5.6 earthquake is nothing to sneeze at!

Yep... FOX News just broke in to report it. 5.6 is not too bad for CA, but none the less can cause some minor damage.

Glad you're okay! Fox just reported the quake a few minutes ago, but they can't get any details yet. What's going on? Sounds like 5.6 is strong but not too destructive?

5.6 is a "moderate" earthquake. It's not going to cause too much damage to structures... mainly broken glass etc.

The epicenter was VERY close to you in Temecula.

This was pretty exciting...I've been waiting over a year to feel an earthquake...and this was the perfect size for a first...hee hee. Glad it wasn't a damaging one... What a "rockin" way to wake up....(pun)

Fox just reported that this was a "deep" earthquake, which is good news. Why is that? What exactly does "deep" mean and why is that good?

Deep means at the surface it wasn't as strong(the earth absorbs the shock).
If it was closer to the surface, it would have been stronger on the surface and likely longer.

Thanks! That makes sense to me now. When they said "deep," I thinking greater scope (i.e., going deeper, covering more ground) as opposed to farther away (i.e., at a deeper point).

Our local news says it felt stronger than it was because it was a shallow quake at only 8 miles deep....guess there is always conflicting stories....but from what I've heard in interviews and stuff from ppl in the epicenter, it did feel stronger, compared to a 6.0. Damage reports in so far are just mirrors and pictures knocked off walls and broken glass....NO DAMAGE here for us. Highway 74 has also hexperienced a rockslide on the highway, due to this earthquake...

I was thinking 8 miles was pretty shallow... the big Seattle quake back in 2001 was about 30 miles deep and they called it "really deep"(the shock was MUCH MUCH less than can be expected with a 6.8).

Glad you're all okay Shannon. And what a way to be awakened on a Sunday morning too!
Wonder if there will be aftershocks?

Some HEAVY DAMAGE from Cahuilla Creek Indian casino in Anza gap, suspected to be the exact epicenter of this quake...
The parking lot sustained a huge open crack, slot machines fell over, black jack tables collapsed and there is mild structural damage to the casino walls....

A floor to ceiling bookshelf fell on an 8 yr old boy...scared his parents to death, but the boy is OK now...glad to hear he's OK...Messes to clean up in the house..lots of broken stuff...people say it was pretty scary and sounded like a freight train, tank, helicopters....
Miss Mary...lots of aftershocks, dozens, actually, but none that we have felt....pretty wild morning....

No damage here as well, I'm about 55 miles NW of the epicenter, so it was pretty minor here. I do have some friends in Palm Springs that said they got quite a jolt! I'm worried about aftershocks and energy transfers to closer fault lines.

Furry...you're much braver than me living out there! At least here you can prepare for a hurricane and get the heck out of Dodge! I'd be calling the moving van people and heading back east!!!!! Am I a chicken? You betcha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to know that you and your family are ok and no damage.

I got to sleep in today!

No shaking and rocking to wake me up this morning...lol
It appears that there are still aftershocks going off in and around, but nothing I have felt...
Though it was exciting to experience my first earthquake, and it was a nice sized one with very minimal damage, (what a combo!) I do hope that this is not something that we frequently experience...
Anyone here experience the Northridge quake??? Or one of such intensity?
