The stepfather of a 2-year-old boy who fatally shot himself Friday with a loaded gun the child found under a playpen was arrested late Friday and booked with negligent homicide, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said Saturday.

"He said he hid the gun under the playpen because he was too lazy to put it up," Lee said.

Quallion Louis, 22, of 200 Deckbar Ave., Jefferson, also was booked with possession of stolen property in connection with the death of his stepson, Troy Bickham, Lee said.

Troy accidentally shot himself in the eye with the .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol at his home at 713 Hooter Road, Bridge City, while he was in a room with his 1-year-old sister and 6-year-old brother Friday about 8:30 p.m. Troy's mother and stepfather were in the living room at the time of the shooting, according to the Sheriff's Office .

The child was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He would have been 3 years old Saturday, Lee said.

The pistol had been reported stolen in September. The sheriff didn't know where it was stolen from. Louis told investigators that he owned the weapon, which he had "bought off the street" about a month ago, Lee said.

A bond of $76,000 was set for Louis, who remained in jail Saturday at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

Some people really amaze me with their gross stupidity.

Unbelievable! Totally unbelivable! How could anyone be THAT lazy? What a pity it wasn't the stepfather playing with the gun instead of the innocent child.

ER rule #24 - Children should never, ever have access to guns.
ER rule #25 - Idiots should never, ever have access to guns.
ER rule #26 - Drunks should never, ever have access to guns.
ER rules #42 - Forget any rules about guns or we wouldn't have a job.

(For the record, I'm pro-Amendment Two.)

I agree if the rules above were implemented we would have minimal accidental deaths from firearms. Maybe they should give an IQ test to a person before their allowed to own a gun.

I own a gun bought years ago when I had a truck attempt to run me off the road 2 nights at midnight on my way to work in New Orleans. I wanted protection and felt safer with it ( I am a great shot and not afraid to use the gun to protect self or family). Now that I have a very curious 21 month old grandson living in my home the gun is locked in a safe unloaded and the ammo is hidden seperately. He will not even be shown the gun to know it is there. If needed as he gets older I may have to make other arrangements for it. I would die if he hurt himself or anyone else because I was stupid.

It also has a trigger lock.

Your IQ is high.

What is extra dumb is that the handgun had to have been "charged" and ready to fire. NO 2 year old can rack the slide of a .45, and I'll bet that they can't pull the hammer down, either - though that still meant that there was a round already chambered and that the safety was off. Another dead kid for the anti-gun people to exploit.
