I don't know if americans know how lucky they are to be able to have a dedicated weather channel... We have .. 0.. With sattelite (which costs 40$ U.S) per month here (rip off) only comes with 60 channels, and the closest there is to a weather channel is Discovery where they will sometimes show a storm story... Ofcourse there isn't much weather do cover here, but geeez, what I wouldn't do to be able to have a dedicated weather channel

I'll send Stephanie Abrams and Hillary Andrews over there to start one ASAP.

Seriously though, as much as I am unhappy with our Weather Channel at the present time... we are lucky to have one.

The Canadians have a MUCH better one...all weather, nothing but weather. TWC USED to be like that...

Our forecasting is terrible IMHO.. There will be a severe thunderstorm forecast up country and they won't go into any detail... It will be a "There is a chance of severe thunderstorms in 'so-and-so' " They don't even say what a severe thunderstorm entails on occasions... oh well, third world countries

Do they have the infrastructure in place to support accurate and real-time forcasting?

Luckily we don't get too many severe storms, but when we do the only way people can find out about it is if they are signed up for cellular phone reports from the South African Weather Service, which I THINK is only for businesess, But during storms there is no coverage on T.V at all, the closest is probably radar images on the website, of which not many can go, cause they don't have access to internet, But during a storm, there is no information on it at all... So not very real-time at all, A 6am advisory , a 00 advisory and a 16 advisory, that's it :/

Ahh, yes. The rip off of overseas satellite service.

Actually, when I lived in Germany, I couldn't have a satellite (building policy) so I had to get cable. $40 a month for 10 channels. Woohoo!

(However, I was willing to pay that $40. I can't stand American Forces Network)

I would've loved having cable or satellite options overseas back in the prehistoric days of the 1970s.

Stuck with 1 crappy channel... Guess that was okay considering there were no remotes back then either

Yeah, I'm sitting with 4 channels at the moment, with a 60 second weather forecast per/day.. Thank goodness I have internet instead.

Senor-how could you not like A-Farts? When I was in the Philippines we had a TV Antenna to pick up the Manila Stations and ignored AFPN. I mean under Marcos we weren't going to be told the real news no matter who we watched so we ignored the news and watched the local programming.

Meso - leave to you to make us see TWC in another light. And you're right, we should be glad to have a cable channel devoted to nothing but wx. In theory that is true. If you go back in time. TWC used to be like that - all wx. Now it's oh 1/3 wx, 2/3's other stuff (traveling tips, gardening, cooking for specific seasons, allergy info, Storm Stories, etc.). At least that's the way the ratio seems to me. Discuss everyone if you see it another way.

I am sorry you have such poor wx forecasting where you live. We do take it for granted up here. I have several outlets to check wx - Internet, TWC, local news, wx band radio, etc. We used to have a wx hotline phone #, but I haven't called that # in years. The one I rely upon most is online sites, they are rapid, up to the minute with radar. TWC who we often ask ourselves now in the US.

But at least you made us stop and think what it would be like to not even have TWC. I thank you for that.

I wasn't a big fan of AFN... Glad I was only in Germany for 2 weeks.

Yeah I guess we'll leave Sharon for you Bill. But I liked your send list pojo, but we need to add Alexandria to it and not sure if you had Miss Bobble head girl in there but Hillary nods her head way too much! Just leave Cheryl Lemke, Vivian Brown, bring back Jill Brown and we'll be set in the primo female OCM list. Heather's growing on me now. I just want a female OCM to know geography well (remember Lisa, !), be professional (no frying eggs on a New York sidewalk, thank you very much) and get with the current times (Alexandria, ugh!).

Yeah, thanks for making us realize that things aren't so bad here. I'll remember that the next time I want to get mad at Ms. Bobblehead.
