Neighborhood Ice Cream Trucks...

Growing up, we had a musical ice cream truck roam the town back in the 50's. You could hear him coming from a few blocks away and then you'd watch for him to approach your neighborhood.

I was happy to hear (and see) a neighborhood ice cream truck in our granddaughter's neighborhood in San Diego. Thought those things bit the dust years ago.

Anyone else ever see them or hear them where you live?

Some of them were scared off by the cost of doing that business...and some by the bad rap they might have received as a magnet for neighborhood kids.

Good ice cream. That's what I remember most. And never once did anyone keep us away from the ice cream man because he might be "of questionable character."

I remember those ice cream trucks well! I used to pester my folks for change for a bullet pop as soon as I heard the music.
The cost of doing business has made them a rarity, and the perception (right or wrong) that some of these operators were dealing in more than just ice cream.
Where I live in Key West, we have a Cuban guy come around in his three-wheeled Cushman (an old post office vehicle) selling flavored shaved ice. He doesn't play the traditional music but instead rings a series of chimes to alert the kids.
Ah, the days when life seemed to be more simple!

Oh boy does this bring back memories. Thanks Steve.

This will really age me but the first truck I remember that relieved the summer heat was the milkman's truck. Yes, we had a milkman and believe it or not his truck was kept cold by gigantic blocks of ice. (Yes, I'm from the Ice Age)lol

Anyway at the end of his run for the day, our milkman would drop one of those huge blocks of ice on the pavement and it would shatter leaving all the kids in our neighborhood scurrying for our version of a frozen treat. It's funny, even though that ice had no flavor, I can still remember the taste and I can still remember the excitement I felt when I saw that white truck turning the bend on my street.

Ya know, believe it or not, we in *Lil Ol Pinetop* have one, the guy comes around every evening around 1700 hrs just like clock work, Michelle has gone out numerous times jumpin up and down like a little kid, the guy looks at her like "Geesh Lady!"

We've got one here, too. They just started it up,
again, in the past year or so, and, the kids still
flock out to the road to buy ice cream!

We have an ice cream man here in Douglasville...he doesn't come around the circle every day, but every once in a while you'll hear the bells and chimes and see kids running toward the street in excited anticipation -- the way I did as a child :)

I am happy to say living out here in the country we have an ICE CREAM MAN who comes through the neighborhood. I can have a freezer full of ice cream treats - but she wants one off the truck. Needless to say - she can hear him three streets over....one of live's simple pleasures.

Ahh the joys of being a parent!! Just cannot deny a child the thrill of buying a frozen treat from an old man in a musical truck.....only to have it melt all down their arms and chin. I love the Ice Cream Man!!

Yes, we have them...a matter of fact, we have 3. We've been visited already a few times...and one was in late May!!! I couldn't believe it...that was the earliest that I ever saw the ice cream man.

In Early May, a mexican guy came around and one of our youth build members went running down the street to get him. (In Green Bay)

AHHH childhood flash back!!!

The ice-cream truck used to come past our house everyday when I was a kid. I used to have a strawberry-vanilla swirl with a flakie (flake is a chocolate bar...it's all crumbly)

I have not seen one around my neighbourhood, but I really wish there was one.. cant beat the ice-cream from the ice-cream man :)

We still have a "Mr. Softee" that comes around my neighborhood! There's alot of them in this area.

I remember when I was really young it was the "GoodHumor" man that originally came around.
