Just popped up as breaking news on ABC.com too.

and on CNN:

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A large portion of Los Angeles was blacked out Monday when electrical power was lost.

The power got knocked out shortly before 1 p.m. PT after two power surges.

Traffic lights throughout downtown and the San Fernando Valley were not working, causing major traffic problems, according to video from helicopter news crews.

Downtown highrises also were darkened.

The city's department of water and power said it was investigating the cause and extent of the outage.

I like how it says "Watch NBC4 and refresh this page for updates" -- and it's an LA news station.

Doesn't seem to be on the scale of the East Coast blackout 2 years ago...

AP: No evidence of terrorism... series of power surges believed to be the cause.

LAX is operating.

*snicker* If it wasn't for the caps, that sentence would sound like a definition and I'd have to correct you.

Power Back Up Here

We lost power for about 35 minutes or so...starting at about 1pm.

It just got restored about 5 minutes ago, and things are back to normal.

It was somewhat frightening considering the threats made to the city by Al Qaida last night, but hopefully nothing has happened. Wow, what a scare.

Glad you're OK Avery. :D

Power failures are the most frusturating things that I have to deal with especially when I don't save my work in MS Word and I have to re-do pages and pages!

Let's see how the city of traffic deals with some of the traffic lights being out.

We'll we didn't deal with it very well. Our freeways snarled up & we've had a couple of ambulances come by within the last 30 minutes or so.

Good to hear.

Duck, at first I thought you were just referring to the station itself. But it's hard to "stay tuned" if there's no power.

I was in LA at the time of the power outage. I was staying in Burbank at a friends house and her sister called sometime between noon and 1 and said power was out in North Hollywood. About a half hour later our power went out. It didnt go out like a normal power outage... it dimmed slowly till it was completely out. Traffic wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be. No mad chaos. Power was restored after an hour or 2.
