Well, the trip to A&M was a BLAST!! I got to College Station at about 6pm and we checked in at the hotel. We ate at Outback Steakhouse for Father's Day and then took a little trip to the campus to get acquainted with it before the invitational on Monday. Needless to say I was BREATHLESS when I saw the campus. I never knew it was so HUGE!! There was construction all over the place, which is something I never expected to see. (I later found out that the current president of A&M vowed to have construction projects going on non-stop...to keep expending and improving.) It seemed like a whole other city...it was that big! The roads on campus were in sorry shape, however. It reminded me of Houston so much that I never got home sick while I was there. Anyway, after almost an hour of exploring the campus, we headed back to the hotel and went to bed.

The next day, I woke up at 6:30, and we ate breakfast at Denny's. I didn't eat very much because I was so nervous...it was going to be my first true college visit. So we finished and drove back down to the campus, where I checked into Neeley residence hall and dropped off my luggage. We were given a colored lanyard (mine was red), which was used to put us into tour groups. Me and the other honors invitational students (there were 188) followed two tour guides and they showed us around and explained everything to us. We learned all sorts of chants and historical footnotes...I don't even remember any of it...it was that much info! After that, we broke up into our color groups, went inside (it was HOT), and played games to help us get to know each other better. Throughout the day, we went into little rooms where we learned more about the honors program and the college in general. We then broke up into pre-determined groups divided into the separate colleges. When we first signed up, we got to choose what college we wanted to tour...I chose College of Science. So we learned a little about A&M's science program and got a few handouts. The whole time I was in awe of how big everything was. I seemed so lost...thank God for our tour guides!! After that, we ate a fancy lunch, got some more info on the program, and went back to our dorm (more on our dorms later...). We changed clothes into bathing suits and exercise clothes...we were about to go to dinner and then to the recreation center. It was then that I met my roommate...he seemed OK...we only said like 8 words to each other over the 2 day period.  Guess there wasn't much to say. The barbeque dinner was good and the rec center was HUGE! It had 5 volleyball courts, 3 basketball courts, and a couple of swimming pools...and that was just the outside portion! There was more inside, but it was 10pm and off limits to us. It's supposed to be the largest university rec center in the country. I didn't need to see the inside...I believed them just by seeing the outside part! We had a choice to go back to our dorms either at 11pm or 12am. If we stayed till 12, we could see the moomoo races (don't ask, don't tell), but I was tired and decided to check out early. So we walked for 15-20 minutes (I told you the campus was big!) back to the prison...I mean...the *dorms* and got ready for bed. My roommate decided to go back at 12, so I got some alone time...something I really needed. BUT...

*DORM RANT ON*

UGH, the dorm was such a hellhole!! It was a white BOX with 2 BOXES for beds and a lousy 6 inch thick mattress for...well, a mattress. And the showers...oh don't get me started on the SHOWER! It was nothing but cold water for 15 minutes...I was about to give up on it when it decided to switch to warm. But it kept getting hotter, and I couldn't turn it down and make it cooler! I was lucky to get everything washed before the water reached the scalding point. I managed to survive that, and then decided to go to bed. The room wasn't cold, although before I came I was told they would be. I went to bed fairly easity (how I managed that I don't know), but I woke up 5 times in the middle of the night! One time was because some girls knocked on my door really loud and asked me if I ordered a pizza...I told them I didn't and went back to bed. The other 4 times I woke up because it was so cold and all I had was one blanket that A&M provided. I ended waking up at 6am but decided not to go back to bed...it wasn't worth it. So I laid there for an hour, went downstairs, and ate breakfast. And get this...the dorm I stayed in was "one of the nicest and most expensive dorms on campus". I didn't EVEN want to know what the cheaper ones were like...

*DORM RANT OFF*

I ate an egg taco and orange juice for breakfast...it filled me up and tasted good. A happy ending to a hellish night. We got divided up again into groups. It was another tour like the one where I went to the College of Science, but this time I went to the College of Geosciences...which includes...METEOROLOGY!!! Yay!!! So we went to the Oceanography and Meteorology (O&M) building (the tallest on campus and the tallest building between The Woodlands and Dallas). The met department was on the top 2 floors, which was awesome cause we could look out the window and see the campus. Our guide, who was a graduate student majoring in meteorology, took us to the observatory, which was about 14-15 floors up. The room is surrounded by windows and you can literally see for MILES! You can see the entire campus including Kyle Field and the bell tower, College Station, Bryan, and countless trees...it was AMAZING!!! Too bad I didn't have my camera. :x  So while up there, our giude told us about the met program...everything I could ever want to know. We got a list of courses and a recommended course plan for all 4 years. There were only 5 of us (2 girls...one who was interested in met as well...*GASP*) in the group so it was very personal, which I thought was great. An hour later we went and had lunch, after which we listened to the lecture about the "Invention of Race in Shakespeare". I don't remember too much about it (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz if you know what I mean  ) but I do remember the professor was very energetic. He walked back and forth and jumped up and down...I thought he'd explode! :o I have to give him credit for trying to make english interesting, however. So after that we were done. We went back to the dorms (which were still freezing BTW), got our stuff, and checked out. And so my first visit to a university was complete! All in all it was an awesome experience (dorms notwithstanding).

I'm sure Shannon and Rob think I'm a big whiner, but it was my first time at a university, so bear with me!

Absolutely exciting, OtherHD! There are some luxuries that you
have to pass up in college, but, oh, the experience goes with you,
forever! Those are "grandkid" stories! :ggreen: Thanks for
sharing that - what an awesome adventure!

More beer usually takes care of the matress problem. As far as the showers, somethies it pays to wait for someone else to take a shower and get in after them LOL Let them get the cold water. If that doesn't work, go back to the beer. At least you won't care then :-)

College isn't all it's cracked up to be (pardon me...just got out of a 5 hour lecture class) :D I would have preferred to stay in the dorms. But I am an old married woman with children so I come home each night. You are gonna have a blast in college!! Hopefully you will get a better roomie though

My college dorm memories are a conglomeration of hot and cold temperatures, always cluttered environment, roommates that flunked out each semester, and some smells I really am not sure I want to recall!

Still...the college experience was a good one for me that opened doors and provided opportunities...but believe me, dorm rooms were not on my short list of "best places I ever stayed."

Glad yours was a great experience too. There are at least three great campuses here in Arizona. ASU, U of A, and NAU in Flagstaff. Apparently tens of thousands of kids think they're pretty good too.

A personal weather friend used to work at College Station but transferred to University of Kansas so he could be closer to the thunderstorm action and winter action. He should have traveled to U of Illinois of Indiana or even UW Madison. Those would have been fun weather places.

Good experience for you. That's the kind of things memories are made of! Proud of you for giving it your best.

Kinda scary though when you have girls knocking at the door wanting to deliver you something (maybe even pizza!) and you said it wasn't you that ordered it. Hmmmm. Bet some guy further down the hall took them up on it!

HD >>I'm sure Shannon and Rob think I'm a big whiner, but it was my first time at a university, so bear with me!<<

Don't you know we older folks live thru you younger ones? LOL Keep stories like this coming HD.....brought a smile to this mom. I never experienced going to college right after HS. I know I missed out on quite a lot!!! Went at 30, but hardly the same thing......keep us updated!

I will be sending my firstborn off to college in a little over 2 years from now. She can't wait actually. Nina wants to experience dorm life. Definitely not all it's cracked up to be but sure sounds like something I would have loved at 18! One of those regrets I have.

Poppysky, Goodness...that sounds like my freshman and sophomore year! You just described those years to a T!!!

HD, Don't feel bad about whining...I went through that stage too. Been there...done that. Its normal to whine about the hellholes of college. You will get over that stage once you get accustomed to your daily rituals.

Use the packets that you received to alter your decision on what college to attend. Talk it over with your family...they will hopefully, support your decision.

During the first couple of weeks, you will be lost on campus...its something every new freshman or transfer student goes through. Go with the flow...and you'll be fine. Remember this: 1 hour of class time EQUALS 2 hours of studying!

On the other hand, I'm glad you enjoyed your tour of the meteorology department.

If you have any other questions about college...ask away. I'll see if I can answer them to the best of my knowledge.

HD..that brought back memories of my one semester at SWT in San Marcos. The BIG difference was that you went as a 'Honors Student' and I was there as a 'yes, your honor?' student. I did shoot my best game of pool down at the Jersey Lilly if that counts! You will LOVE the university...give it time. galvbay
